Explore what makes trees a vital part of cities, and how urban spaces throughout history have embraced the importance of trees.

--

By 2050, it’s estimated that over 65% of the world will be living in cities. We may think of nature as being unconnected to our urban spaces, but trees have always been an essential part of successful cities. Humanity has been uncovering these arboreal benefits since the creation of our first cities thousands of years ago. So what makes trees so important to a city’s survival? Stefan Al explains.

Here's a nice example: When my parents bought their house, there was only 1 tree and it has since had to be uprooted due to interfering with pavement. However, since moving in, my parents have planted 5 trees in their garden. A pine tree, a maple, 2 apple trees, and a cherry tree all grow on their property. My mom also has bird feeders all over the place. My mom's garden has become a food court for wildlife. Hummingbirds, cardinals, sparrows, squirrels, rabbits, even deer have been spotted in the yard.

Trees also help with noise pollution. The dense foliage and trunk works well as a sound barrier, reducing city noises to several decibels. Important if you're trying to stay sane in a noisy environment.

As a Singaporean, I am proud of the massive amount of trees here. But recently they have been cut down to make way for housings and buildings. :(

When i used to live in malaysia, there was a giant tree in front of our apartment building, it was planted in this big park that i liked to play in when i was younger. A few years later it was cut down, it was a very sad morning. This video made me really happy seeing all the trees
