My name is Jens Larsen, Danish Jazz Guitarist, and Educator. The videos on this channel will help you explore and enjoy Jazz. Some of it is how to play jazz guitar, but other videos are more on Music Theory like Jazz Chords or advice on how to practice and learn Jazz, on guitar or any other instrument.

The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, but also music theory, analysis of songs and videos on jazz guitars.

Your lessons are really good albeit a bit advanced for me. But I am getting there! :)

In live gigs, audiences / punters actually LOVE to hear a guitarist play things their own way(s). That's been my experience for decades. Guitarists can believe in their abilities all the more if they work on harmonic and melodic materials such as examples presented in this and other videos by Jens. It's not too tricky. When people have told me they like the way I play - that's such a great compliment. They have often told me they have never heard anyone else play like me. So many more guitarists can do this for themselves. I've just had a go at playing what Jens presents in this video. It sounds great - and it's MINE !! Hahahahahaha !! (Wish I could find a 'monster' icon to insert here)

Hello Jens, thank you very much for these shorts, they are exactly the type of lesson for watching and studying for a week at a time for instance (for me anyway 👍) Much appreciated..

I think one of the best/smart usage of the pentatonics is The Red One. Metheny and Scofield have that memorable video about it. Can you analyse it once? Also the tricky rhythm. Thank you!!

The pentatonic harmonies remind me of eastern music.

Love it! I discovered some of these voicings you played from a different perspective. I was taking a E Dorian scale and playing 7, R, 5 voicings moving down the scale.

That first chord you played after the scale sounded exactly like the beginning of The Spinners' It's a Shame

A minor pentatonic! Is C major pentatonic! You can add the G to all of those chords and you’ve got a C6 / A minor 7 voicing, and you can go super deep into finding all of these voicings and mapping them onto the neck, and it makes for really easy and interesting improvisation when you know your pentatonic scales in different keys, because of how many options you have for the 1 and/or 6 chord

The 3 and 5 chord, and the 2 and 4 chord of the key.

Which would be (e minor / g major pentatonic and D minor / F major) pentatonic.

You can also layer them over different root notes within the key for some really beautiful complex voicings that stay in the key!

You can even mess around with Bb major penta for Mixolydian sounds in C and D major penta for lydian sounds in C!

These voicings and their major / minor brothers are such a beautiful world all to themselves!

I spent years finding them all, and linking them,

Now I’m going back to more classical triad approaches, but it was a major fretboard study that totally changed my playing!

Great tip! :)

The pentatonic scale is most amazing for playing Smoke On The Water, but this is kinda cool I guess

How do you know which pentatonic scale goes with which chord? For example, why does A minor go with F major 7?
