Another way of putting it is: major pentatonic starts from the pinky on the E string and it's relative minor starts from the index on the E string

Pinky on the root: relative major

The best method to improvise is to train your ears and use them. If a note sounds like garbage in the musical context, don't play it.

Granted I may have misunderstood your point regarding relative minor however...if you play minor pentatonic pattern one at the fifth fret, you are playing the Am pentatonic scale. Am happens to be the relative minor of C maj, which is also at the 5th fret. Move down 3 frets (2nd fret) and play pattern one you are now playing the A maj pentatonic. (BTW relative minor of A is F#m) Useful for being able to play both major and minor pentatonic scales when a song is in a major key. The minor pentatonic adds some 'bluesy' feel to your riffs.

I call it the circle of thirds.. take all the notes make a circle like you were trying to find your fifth.. to find your third minor you grab the note make it your first count back 2...

If you're starting with D minor as it seems like he is teeing up... Counting back three gets you to D major. It's not the relative major (which would be f major), and it's also definitely not the relative minor as he said in the video.

Only if that key is a major if it’s a major then yeah but if it’s a minor then just play the a minor pentatonic, once you can play minor across then neck ad arpeggios and major scales to

You can also move up to the major pentatonic box when soloing in minor by doing the reverse and getting more notes to play with.

So in this example, in the key of D you can play both the D major scale and then back 3 frets to play the relative minor pentatonic scale?

I learned just put your pinky over the note on the 6th string and you are set. Because counting back 3 is too hard for guitarists I guess lol
