Ayla is back, and in this video lesson she breaks down her approach to guitar solos and improvisation, and it all boils down to the minor pentatonic scale. And for good reason -- many guitarists have made entire careers out of the minor pentatonic scale.

But for a scale that only consists of five notes (‘penta’ meaning five, ‘tonic’ = tone), how can you make the most of it? You add in a little *magic*.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll know the standard pentatonic scale “box”, and how to break out of it by moving up the fretboard. Ayla also demonstrates to you how to throw in a little minor pentatonic *magic* by infusing a few additional notes like major thirds & sharp fourths, among others.

The lesson is a great launching point to begin exploring the endless possibilities for improvising on the guitar.

The challenge with lessons is making it have practical sense meaning it’s easily obtainable to use as a tool during real-time performance. The short of this is: hey guys this is a minor pentatonic scale. When starting the scale with your first finger on the root, it’s minor. Take the same scale and start it with your pinky finger on the root but shift the scale down so the pinky is the minor 3rd of the minor pentatonic scale. This is a major pentatonic. This way the only thing the student really needs to know is the first finger and pinky finger position on the root and major minor based on the finger used. My 2 cents.

I am very much a beginner and it only made sense because I've done it before just playing random notes that sound right I am fascinated by the levels of knowledge and sense that just start to click there was a point where I thought there was no hope but after continually watching videos to keep the interest or buying pedals or anything new to keep me there wanting to pick up the guitar progression just happens in leaps for me from being completely useless to making a nice sound of my own well to that point theres probably nothing you'll do that hasn't been done before but it ain't copied until you've heard it lol

She is a very skilled person who is not only able to play the Guitar with total emotional connection to the music. She can also deliver crystal clear tutorials in either a graphic or oral fluency that belie her age. There are swathes of considerably older academic tutors (I have experienced many of them) who can't compare to her effortless and informative representational abilities. Keep rockin' Ayla.
