I agree completely. It doesn't matter that the Bible is filled with hokum, it is a window into what gave these ancient peoples something to inspire them amidst what would be to us the frightening brutality of daily existence. (It was that to them as well). And we forget that we, as supposedly civilized beings, have science that explains an awful lot of things that these people had only their imagination to figure out. Most people, for example, aren't even aware that many stories in the Bible have been myths stolen from other, even older cultures and religions and appropriated by the ancestors of the Jews. One writer suggested that the Jews only had "their own distinct and unique religion" beginning as late as circa 600 BCE, and while that figure is probably some 400 years off, it shocks some people to learn that the Bible is not the oldest book in the world, nor the most accurate history, as there is little actual history in it.

Ok. So God defeated a formidable sea monster, just so he could create the world, create people, and send himself to be tortured and executed on their behalf.

That's one hell of a plan.

That’s how I’ve always seen the bible. A fascinating collection of fantastical primitive myths, with the intellectual impact of a comic book. I’m convinced that the only people who’ve actually read it and take it seriously are those who firmly believe, in their hearts, that it can make them money and give them a sense of power.

It sounds like she's talking about Isaiah 27:1, where the Bible translations I read describe this as a future battle reserved for a future day. The sea dragon is a chaos figure, may even bear resemblance or be the same as the serpent that tempted Eve, and is a creation of God - not preexistent before God, and will be one of the last enemies ever defeated. Once the chaos figure and all the spiritual enemies of the Lord are defeated and done away with, there will be a world of peace and order, the way God intended for it to be, the way God intended for us to live, ... the redemption of all creation from the curse it is now under. I don't know why she reads that as though it were a past tense battle connected with a monster that had to be eliminated in order for God to create the world; it sounds as though she is confusing the Bible with other creation myths of the Ancient Near East.
