People Are Taking This Stomach Medicine for Way Too Long #indigestion. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole and lansoprazole are medications commonly prescribed to treat conditions related to excess stomach acid production, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers, and gastritis. These medications work by inhibiting the proton pump in the stomach's lining, thereby reducing the production of gastric acid. The proton pump, also known as H+/K+ ATPase, is responsible for pumping hydrogen ions into the stomach, which then combine with chloride ions to form hydrochloric acid. By blocking this pump, PPIs effectively decrease the amount of acid produced by the stomach, leading to relief from symptoms associated with conditions like heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach ulcers. While PPIs are generally considered safe and effective for short-term use, prolonged or excessive use can lead to various side effects, some of which can be serious. One of the primary concerns with long-term PPI use is the potential for nutrient deficiencies. Stomach acid plays a crucial role in the absorption of nutrients such as vitamin B12, magnesium, and calcium. Reduced stomach acid production due to PPIs can impair the absorption of these nutrients, leading to deficiencies over time. Vitamin B12 deficiency, in particular, can result in symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and neurological problems. #vitamins #health

I’ve been on these meds for a decade, definitely going to have a talk with my doctor. Thank you.

I developed a heart problem, saw three cardiologists, I quit ppis which I had been on for 30 years and it completely went away. It said right in the information the entire time you're not supposed to be on a longer than 2 weeks

YES I had to get on PPIs for awful reflux. The physician assistant treating me was awful tho. Didn't explain the diagnosis at all, simply gave a prescription and told me I might have to take it forever. Wtf. I had bad side effects from it and they didn't give af. I used to be a person who hates questioning doctors and being a DIY researcher, but after that experience it's hard to trust. I look up everything now. I fixed my reflux with low fodmap diet, identifying my triggers, working on anxiety, and working with my primary to come off another medication that affects the lower esophageal sphincter. Low and behold, only needed to be on the meds for 6 months to heal. And they STILL wanted me to keep taking these meds "indefinitely" even though I was healed enough...

OR STRESS! Stress can cause chronic acid production. I had this problem everyday to the point of nausea, and i tried all kinds of dietary changes and meds, absolutely nothing worked. Tuen one day, after years of having it, i moved out away from the people who i was living with and it went away in THREE DAYS. The More You Know 🌈🌟

People need to realize that heartburn/GERD can also be from too LOW STOMACH ACID, yes, LOW stomach acid or a hiatal hernia.

I have been taking this longer than 11 years for sure. I have gastric reflux, I need this medication. I get annual blood tests.

I took it for a long time but recently have changed my diet and dropped 3/4 my meds against my doctor's recommendations. And feel so much better

I have GERD and got off of Rabeprazole for a while and managed with Pepcid. Then I lost my voice for three weeks and my dentist noticed tooth damage and my asthma was acting up and they represcribed a year’s worth of Rabeprazole. I do take magnesium at night with it, I supplement vitamin D which got low. Breathing is important, too. Preventing esophageal cancer is important, too. I think this is the solution they came up with for now.

Amazing! You are the first doctor to tell me that. I ask 2 doctors if its ok to take this for so long (9 years) and they said that it doesnt do anything wrong to my body. I am tired for like 8 years, last 3 years I have migrains and not enough magnesium. Perfect.... (PS.: Thank you so much for what you doing, it means a lot to me)

My mother takes them until symptoms subside, which is just a few days. She has severe heartburn and reflux, the kind that doesn't let you sleep. Those are powerful. Over here the prescription is just for a week, you litterally cannot get more omeprazole without medical assessment after that. I think it was a doctor who told her to stop taking them once symptoms subside. Repeat prescription without review is wild.

Thanks for this information that most GPs or pharmacists never warn about.

I have a hiatus hernia, the only option for me is surgery or medication. I looked into the surgery route only to find out that there aren't really any doctors that specialise in hiatus hernia correction surgery. So my only option is to continue using omeprazole

What about GERD? I've been on them a long time too, without them I wake up in the middle of the night choking on stomach acid until I vomit. Literally happened last night as I forgot to take them 1 single day. I tried to go without for a while but ended up taking so many Tums that it caused kidney stones and affected my kidney values (I was borderline needing dialysis for a while). If there is another option, I'm all ears, but until then, I need them.

I think it was last year, I had this dull pain in my abdomen, for two months I went to the doctors and they just kept prescribing omeprazole, obviously it didn't work.I finally got some blood work done by a different doctor and they found out it was H pylori it infected my throat and my stomach.possibly one of the few worst moments of my life.

My heartburn got worse and worse, so they put me on this. They never tried to find out what the issue was, despite have terrible guts, constantly low iron, and always tired.

Turned out I was gluten intolerant and when I changed from gluten the heart burn went away

Drs don't care anymore. A healthy long life is not their agenda
