Who Was Pontius Pilate? | Part 3

In this video we will combine the biblical and non-biblical accounts of Pontius Pilate together to create a historical picture of who he might have been! We will also take a look at some controversial early Christian literature and apocryphal writings about Pontius Pilate to try and answer these questions: Did Pilate convert to Christianity or not? Was he innocent in the murder of Jesus or was he guilty? Did he die a quiet death in Rome or was he filled with so much shame that he committed suicide? Let's take a look, together!

I find it hard for a politician committed to the imperial cult would convert to a Jewish movement, let's remember after Jesus's death, the movement was still Jewish, Christianity was a Jewish cult, that would end up splitting into two or possibly even three new religions: Christianity, Islam and Mandeans... So there's no way for Pontius Pilate to decide to become a follower of a small Jewish movement that would have probably been considered too radical and blasphemous.
So his conversion is probably just antisemitic tradition within early Christianity. The Christians really wanted to see themselves as the heirs to God's promise with Isreal through Christ.

Well I mean, he was the one that gave the final order for Jesus to be crucified. He couldn't take the pressure and the revolt from the jews that were shouting 'crucify him! Crucify him!'

I’m inclined to think that he was a typical Roman tyrant who held the Jews in contempt and would order the death of anyone if it served his own needs.

In trying to discern who Pontius Pilate really was, ...I first question WHY was Tiberius so concerned about upsetting the pharisees with a statue? I understand that it would be an affront to them but, what I don't get is, why would Tiberius care? Especially, if Pilate was behaving so violently towards the pharisees with wanton disregard for their lives. You mentioned that Tiberius was ill however, that seemed closer to the time of his death than when Pilate attempted to smuggle the statue. There seemed to be some trepidation on the part of Tiberius. Which, leads me to believe Pontius could have NOT been as brutal as depicted by Josephus. Could one make this assumption in your opinion?

I missed Part 2. Will you please let me go throughPart2. I never thought about Pontus Pilot as an innocent Roman officer thinking that he was the one who sent Lord Jesus to the cross, but at the same time I do think over that he felt that he was punishing innocent Jesus and washed his hands before he yielded to the brutal crowd of Jews.

Very nice video. But in order to be compete, why didn't you include the letter from Pilate to Caesar? A lot of people think it is fake, but a lot of people think that it is genuine.

Thank you for video. I am going to have to retain my view of a secular non saintly Pontius Pilate

I'd like to point out that he was governor over Judea longer than than any of his predecessors. That shows if nothing else, he was competent.

I have enjoyed this subject. I suppose a case can be made either way depending on which lens a person is viewing through. My opinion leans more to a non-saintly, secular Pilate. Prior to the evidence presented in this series and if the question had ever presented itself, I probably would not have leaned in that direction.

I already watched all of your videos and I am always excited to see new one.

My opinion about this topic on Pilate is that he served a huge role in Jesus life. It sucks to be the one who orders the death of an innocent man more so the Lord and the Son of God. It is still not certain for me that ge converted but we can see in the biblical stories of pilate is that he believes Jesus is innocent. I would say there are truths on the biblical and non biblical accounts of pilate's life and character and that both are needed to give witness to the truth.
