Does Sonic Origins SUCK?! Well...

This past week was the 31st anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, and to celebrate, SEGA has put out Sonic Origins, a compilation of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The first two games having been remastered back in 2013, Sonic CD got a remaster back in 2011 and Sonic 3K getting a remaster for the first time through this collection. It's no secret that I think the current state of Sonic is quite turbulent, but will Sonic Origins come out on top? Well, let's find out!

One thing that definitely sucks about this release is that it caused SEGA to delist all of the classic games on Steam so if you're new to the franchise and want to try just one of them legally, you have to buy this collection with mixed reception that nobody really has anything good to say about other than that it has cool cutscenes. That's not going to be a good look for any potential future fans.

I would have been fine personally if Origins released at $20 like Mania did. But for $40, this seems disappointingly underwhelming. I'd consider waiting for a sale or for the majority of the game bugs to get patched out, because this is not a good first impression.

I don't know why they never port or remaster the Sonic Advance/Rush games since they are 2D, highly acclaimed, extremely beloved by the fanbase, and undeniable proof there are good sonic games after the Genesis.

It's so odd how Chaotix, 3D Blast and Spinball have dedicated sections in the artwork section, the OST section and their own islands.... but Chaotix's isn't present. Almost like they ran out of time and couldn't model a 6th island to use as an Options ground

Funnily enough, Mega Collection and Gems Collection are still the best representation for celebrating Sonic’s History to this day. The presentation of the menu screens and music, selection of games (even the more obscure ones like Flicky), and the usual artwork pieces and stuff, those just feel more celebratory than what Origins has to offer imo.

...Not really but this should've been better for what its meant to be. It's far too rushed and unpolished on top of being rather unambitious with its features. When they advertise "new playable characters" I think it was fair for people to assume that they were going to add either Amy and/or Metal, not just Knuckles in Sonic 1 for the first time officially (Edit: Nvm lol). Mission Mode is a cool extra but it's just that, an extra. Having the drop dash in CD is busted but fun and makes the game better. Tails A.I. is awful in Sonic 2. Menu presentation is okay but you can clearly see where corners are cut with just imported generations models no Knuckles or Amy. Not to mention the technical issues some people are having with the PC version. Overall a decent and convenient place to play the classics and mod support should be good over time but as for the console versions it's overpriced and underwhelming. I don't regret my purchase but I would not recommend this to most people before a price cut.

Sonic 3 A.I.R is still the best way to play 3&K currently if you can get it set up which is a little harder now since the Steam Version of Sonic 3 has been delisted which is utter crap when there are significant problems with the origins version.

it's an overhyped port of those games that were already ported so many times like bruh sega should just start selling mega drives and mega drive games again

Fun fact: Not only are CD’s opening and endings back in 4:3, but the vocal tracks for the JP OST, You Can Do Anything & Cosmic Eternity, have their original vocals again unlike the 2011 remaster (mainly because when they were working on the 2011 remaster, the writer and co-singer of those songs Casey Rankin passed away in 2009 so they couldn’t obtain the rights to use the lyrics in time. Thankfully that’s changed since then)

Man, this game is seriously a “death-by-1000-cuts” situation. I love finally having an official console release of the remastered 2D Sonic games, and there’s clearly effort here unlike in SCU. But there’s so many bugs and quirks not present in the originals that it’s hard to recommend in its current state. If these problems weren’t here (and if Denuvo wasn’t a thing on PC), I’d have no trouble recommending it. If SEGA hasn’t learned by now from constantly pulling the unfinished anniversary release nonsense that killed the franchise, I don’t know if they ever will…

My biggest gripe with Sonic Origins is shockingly, the input lag.

I don't know if it's the PC version only or only on my end, but it feels it has more input lag than the games emulated or the decompilations... I thought these were supposed to be remakes, how the heck did this happen?

No matter how good or bad the game as a package is, those animations are glorious and I love anyone who worked on them

Do you know that the game is so slap dash that 1-Ups replace lives right? Coins replace lives so in debug mode in anniversary mode in Sonic 2 instead of lives you can place coins.
This allows you to get infinite coins from Sonic 2's debug mode. Pretty funny if you ask me.

I actually won Sonic 3 in that McDonald's promotion. One day I came home from school and it was just sitting there in the mail box. I lost my shit as I rarely got new games except for my birthday and Christmas. From what I remember though it didn't come with the normal box; I just got the cartridge in a manilla envelope which I thought was weird.

I hope SEGA lets the devs patch Origins and possibility add new features (maybe has a Sonic Origins Plus, similar to what they did for Mania). The foundation for a great collection is there, it just needed more time in the oven

I'm so shocked the rushed the game and is more expensive than mania was. Shameful Sega shameful

The point where I lost all confidence in this collection was when I saw the Ubisoft styled edition list. It was already a TERRIBLE concept when Ubisoft was doing it, but the fact that a Sonic collection is doing it is what killed any chance of me picking it up.

If this compilation had the 4 remastered games and then Mean Bean, Spinball, 3D Blast, Knuckles Chaotix and some of the Game Gear games as extras then it would have been perfect. As it stands the compilation is pretty underwhelming.

It's great that you mentioned fan projects such as Sonic 3 A.I.R, because that's what SEGA is actually competing against, that's the the bar they have to at least reach, yet they don't.

The competition with Sonic 3 AIR is tough.
I enjoyed this collection but this should NOT have been crunched, or had old games delisted.

Yuji Naka has always been the bold type to just spit facts. I remember around when Unleashed was coming out that they interviewed Yuji Naka and Takashi Izuka separately. They were both asked the question if we would get another Sonic Adventure style game. Izuka gave use the boiler play answer of "I would love to work on another Adventure game and I think those games have a special taste to them, I'll always be looking to make another in the future", while Naka just said "this is the end of the Adventure era".

This is probably a reason he keeps having troubles keeping jobs and deals with lots of HR issues. He basically seems to be completely unfiltered. It's like that dude who won't stop talking about how cool their guns are and how they would fight the government to keep them with stickers all over their truck. XD
