Iwo Jima Battle on the Beach - Flags of our Fathers

In February and March of 1945, U.S. troops fight and win one of the most crucial and costly battles of the war on the island of Iwo Jima. A photo of U.S. servicemen raising the flag on Mount Suribachi becomes an iconic symbol of victory to a war-weary nation. The individuals themselves become heroes, though not all survive the war and realize it.

This and Letters from Iwo Jima are my favorite Clint Eastwood films. Gritty and truly emotional to see a famous battle from both point of views. True masterpiece.

That cockpit point of view at 0:53 is so intense. Everyone fighting their own war in different ways.

How the hell do you survive this, Omaha Beach, or the Battle of Stalingrad? Does anyone else watch these war films and think to yourself how you’d fair up? I couldn’t do it. I can’t even imagine. Fucking insane. RIP the greatest generation and grandpa. Truly the last great men.

One of the reasons I loved this movie is because clint Eastwood showed a personal attachment towards the characters while also showing just how large the battle was with views of the mountain and the navy air planes flying over

Wasent just marines vs Japanese army but air force navy all sent into hell

It's hard to believe people forget or just sometimes ignore the hell these boys went through in Europe and the pacific

Extract from an Iwo Jima poem by Frank Gardner (relevant to this clip):

The enemy artillery responded with a roar!
It ripped, and tore, and shattered us, heads down against the shore.
Volcanic ash got soaked with blood; we had no place to hide!
So, move ahead is what we did, with pain.... and "Semper Pride."

My grandfather fought at the Battle of Iwo Jima as a troop transport pilot. He rarely spoke about the battle, but once he told me the most traumatizing thing about his experience was seeing young men he'd delivered half an hour ago be sent back to the ships mangled bloody and wounded, in many cases too wounded to survive.

It reeked of sulphur, could go from hot to cold at any given time, no water, and the enemy was so dug in it took a month to end a battle on a 5 by 3 mile speck of land. Make no mistake- the battle of Iwo Jima was truly hell on earth.

2:50 "...Don't cover shit!..." My favorite line from this movie. Those flamethrower Marines had a hell of a job to do. Literally. Do your research into it. It's nuts! My grandaddy was a marine in ww2, and my dad was a Vietnam marine. I don't know too much of what they did except that my grandaddy was infantry and my dad was a door gunner. I didn't ask cause they both scared the shit out of me just by "the look" if you know what I mean. So I have nothing but respect for all Marines. Past, present, and future.

Crazy to think that Barry Pepper served in Europe and was KIA then came back to serve in the Pacific. And then later on hit 61 home runs for the Yankees!

The landing of Iwo Jima was a significant event during World War II for the American forces. It began on February 19, 1945, when the United States launched Operation Detachment, aiming to capture the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese Imperial Army.

The assault was led by the U.S. Marine Corps and involved around 70, 000 Marines. The landing faced intense opposition as the Japanese defenders had fortified the island with an intricate network of bunkers, tunnels, and fortified positions.

My father flew Corsairs during WW2. The cockpit view at :53 gave me a brief glimpse into his perspective during combat.
