My grandmother was a Japanese Red Cross nurse attached to the Imperial Army. She witnessed the Doolittle Raid! Then she spent the rest of the war in Singapore.

When Japan surrendered, she became a POW of the British. As a nurse, she was treated like an officer. The sentries would snap to attention. British officers held the door for her, and say, "Good morning, Miss Mogami."

In school, elemtentary through high, we'd host Japanese exchange students every year.

I my senior year, my exchange student and I spoke of the war and her ignorance believing Japan to be a victim was apparent. She was shocked to read and see pictures of the war in American books.

It's not just Japan. Most of the world's school curriculums go very easy on their own country's messed up history.

Yup- have visited the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. Admiral Yamamoto and other alleged war criminals are revered there. The entrance inscription claims that America forced Japan into WW2. Germany has addressed its war time past openly. Japan has stopped short of a full apology and has yet to acknowledge atrocities in Asia. Little has changed in nearly 78 yrs.

My mom's Japanese and she gets very agitated if I mention or watch any media that portrays Japan during WW2 negatively. She accuses me of being ashamed of my Japanese ancestry just because I acknowledge Japan did fucked up shit. She taught me growing up to see both sides of the argument while I was learning about WW2, since I live in Hawaii and all that, but she denies shit like Nanking and the torture and outright execution of prisoners of war. Don't get me wrong, I love my mom but holy shit. She thinks Japan had no choice but to invade half of Asia to prevent itself from becoming a European colony.

As a German, it's unimaginable to me that anyone would cover up or gloss over the crimes of WW2.

That's actually super sad and disturbing to hear. Your country's TRUE history is extremely important, regardless of how good or bad it may be.

The Japanese actors in the move "Undefeated" said they thought that Japanese soldiers back then must have had mental problems to do those things. (Can't remember the exact phrase they used)

I stood next to 3 Japanese young adults st the Australian War Museum in Canberra (one of the great museums of the world…) and they were incredulous that Japan had been so reviled for their brutality and omnipresent war crimes.
I was amazed at their incredulity.

Ya. Lol. They were the victims. I think 3 million Chinese would disagree

Fun fact: while westerners say ww2 started when Hitler invaded Poland, most east asian countries consider the Japanese invasion of Manchuria to be the actual start of ww2 since it happened before

if we don’t teach our children the truth no matter how hard it is to hear, how will they learn not to repeat our mistakes

They dont teach about the r8pe of Nanking or the activities of Unit 731, or that one of Unit 731s main facilities were in Hiroshima.

When I was at Pearl Harbor there was a group of Japanese tourists listening to a park ranger that spoke Japanese. He later told me on the side that it is very rare that Japanese have any knowledge of what happened at Pearl Harbor.
