MMA Striking Defense || Evasion & Elbow Blocking Explained

No surprise that the better MMA boxers have some of the better defensive technique is boxing range, using the combination of elbow blocking, shoulder rolling, and torso movement in closer quarters.

This isn't "open field" striking defense, as that would be more about footwork, takedowns or even kicking defense....this is when the gap is closed and via hook or by crook you're going to need to block, deflect, slip and roll, bob and weave and counter punch to be effective in this game of hit and not get hit.

This was a Patron's request, so let me know if this sort of thing interests you, say takedown defense, more footwork for evasion etc.

Thanks for watching, cheers.

Fake numbers. I have been doing this for almost 10 years. It’s only allowing likes when they’re overwhelming and the views make no sense. Why?
Imagine, I have nearly 30, 000 subs and got wayyyy more views when I had 10K, and I’m doing the same thing (just more often, and I’m now better at it).
Maybe if I used a fake name and covered street fights and PVZ’s NC-17 debut🖕🏻

This video is as good as a 20 min breakdown. I kept re-reading and re-watching segments trying to absorb it all haha. Great work, I love learning about what goes into good defense.

After the positive response from my Patrons and the BD Club (thank them, they keep this channel alive) I figured defense is skipped too often in videos, not just myself but in general. Let's see how the second tier smarks respond, and maybe I'll cover this more often.
We only need 43 more sign-ups ($5, Patreon or here) before I start doing a podcast. I'm either going to riff or have a pahtnuh, but importantly, we are close. Thanks everyone, it's been a long ride, those who've been with me through the drama....anywho, thanks, sincerely

Nice breakdown ! I think the youtube algorithm favors content produced by big corporate interests, a lot of smaller youtubers get hammered.

Brendan, brilliant as always, you're breakdown of Chandler's move to land that shot, I immediately thought telephone!!, would that have worked in this case? Also I was waiting for the Kevin Holland breakdown, but when he's on the fence, looking like he's getting beat up, the shoulder and telephone + elbows all block every attack, this man imo is very underrated, am I right about Holland when up again the cage?? As usual spot on with your breakdown..

Great vid BD, Awesome segment to dissect, do you think blocking like izzy and jon jones can work if the puncher is the same height or taller then the person framing ??

What makes the difference between a coach who doesn't teach boxing backwards and one who does? Between a fighter who doesn't seek to train it vs one who does? Between a team that focuses only on improving the strengths/comforts of a fighter vs a team that seeks to make a fighter as complete a martial artist/fighter as possible? Is there ever any thought given to a fighter taking a voluntary year or two off (not forced from injury, suspension, personal life, etc.) for the purpose of training or learning a new area or art? I'm such a perfectionist/completionist that I can't fathom becoming involved in a high level competition without having at least somewhat educated chops in every aspect of that competition. It continually blows my mind that so many elite fighters in MMA seem to have so little to show in so many areas, even while demonstrating jaw-dropping, belt-winning mastery in others. Obviously you can bank on that mastery to an extent, but if this sport has taught us anything it's that there's always someone out there who can do something better than you can, and if you aren't prepared for it you'll be in for a long night. Everyone may not have time to master everything, but being caught so completely off-guard and over-matched for never bothering to train something like boxing backwards or how to deal with someone who is good at it seems completely avoidable for anyone who does this for a living. Answering my own question a bit here, but I would guess that in a sport so young without the same kind of child-to-adult development paths that other major sports in this country have, we see fewer lifetime practitioners to begin with who can then see even more success because of the lack of super athletes (who are mostly gobbled up by those other sports) to have to contend with.

I love your constant reminders about rhythm as it relates to feinting, countering, overall defense, etc. Here are some more musical terms I would apply to certain fighters who have a knack for fucking up their opponents with slick timing and overall unpredictability: syncopation, metric modulation, surprise fermatas/rubato, tempo elasticity(especially sudden shifts), polymetric fuckery😉(think multiple, constantly changing time signatures combined with metric modulation ), polytonality, side-slipping, and flexible beat placement(i.e. play on, behind, or in front of the beat, comfortably and effortlessly)...So much Dorman mojo in under 7 minutes...👍🏽🤗

As always awesome content! What are the most well rounded fighters ever in your opinion? How would you rank the following fighters concerning this?
Dj
Tj
Volkanovski
Poirier
Edwards
Gsp
Mousasi

Who did I miss and where would you integrate them?

Brendan, while watching ufc 200 yesterday I noticed something in the lesnar-hunt match the second round was too standing fight but the mark hunt could barely touch him. Lesnar's striking defense was better than his ufc first run. Also cormier is struggling Silva's half-guard/Lockdown. I wonder What are your thoughts?

dude, a 50% like to vie Did you rub parts together with Susan's sister and leave her hangin? This is by a mile the best martial arts education channel on the platform, literally it's just not close, and they STILL decimate your numbers EVERY FUCKIN TIME.
It's horse shit, 100%
