The king of Breitling history (@watchfred) reveals personal watch collection

Even if you haven’t had your ear to the ground, you’ve probably noticed something going on with Breitling. In the past couple of years the Swiss brand has moved its focus from intense, flashy sports watches to pieces inspired by Breitling’s more sophisticated history, and that’s the result of a couple of key individuals. The first is the CEO Georges Kern, who started steering the company in a more heritage-focused direction almost as soon as he took the reins in 2017. The second is Fred Mandelbaum, better known as @watchfred on Instagram, who went from an obsessive vintage Breitling collector to a Breitling historian in an official capacity.

Brilliant interview, Andrew, thank you. Fred has been a major contributor to Breitling and a highly regarded voice in the industry. Heck of a nice guy, too!

Wow. Just wow. This was my favorite video from you yet Andrew. I’m just amazed by those vintage examples, particularly given their slimness and elegant designs. Well done.

Fantastic interview. There are some absolute diamond vintage models to be found in Breitlings back catalogue. You don't have to go back to the 1940s though.
You can find them in the 80s, 90s and early noughties (pre-2009 only in my opinion) before Kern arrived 2017.
There was effectively almost a decade, which ironically included the introduction of the b01 movement, where Breitling lost it, both in aesthetics and model choice
Credit to Georges and Fred for sorting it out.

What a wonderful video! I was lucky enough to be gifted a Breitling Colt Automatic II 38mm in 2001. I had it serviced for the second time earlier this year and it came back looking brand new. It’s such a beautiful watch!

What a guy, and what a collection! Any brand would be lucky to have someone so passionate about their history on board. Props to Georges for recognising what an asset Fred is. Heading straight to insta to drop Fred a follow.

Excellent chat with so much love for Breitling.

I wish they would move a fair bit more back to the aviation part of the business and innovate it more.

Cheers from Sydney.

Excellent interview🙂👍. Love Fred's enthusiasm and modesty. Looks like I subbed this channel just at the right time. Guess even a blind pig can find an acorn once in a while.

Never bothered with Brietling at all, but, last few years they seemed to offer a great product.
Clear definition on product lines and of course the icon. My personal favourite is that pistachio dial which is just stunning.

I want the pistachio dial so bad. Such a great looking watch. Next year I hope!

Best Breitling feature that didn't come from Kerns directly.
