The origin of the phrase comes from tailor work. The original meaning was that the work has been assigned and prepared for you, and there's no getting out of it. Through colloquial use the meaning shifted to meaning that the work was difficult. The evolution of the English language and phrases like this are fascinating

The modern meaning is nothing like the original meaning, which used to be logical. Now, as you've pointed out very well, and I agree with, the phrase makes it sound like it's been made easy for you, so it's just a plain stupid thing to say about a difficult job.

OMG. i have the same thoughts.

what do you think about people using halves in arbitrary scales? i.e. on a scale of 1 to 10, it's a 5 and a half... just use a 20-point scale!

I wonder if the term originated when someone was "trying to be helpful" with a woodworking project and didn't know what the original plan was and cut out pieces of what THEY thought the plan should be vs what the do-er had in mind?
Or perhaps it came from someone cutting out a puzzle or project and handed the person the pieces without any kind of directions vs if they had known the plan/directions it wouldn't be so difficult.
TLDR. Wonder if it came from someone having to bend to another's idea vs just letting the do-er do it their way

The meaning "cut out" is being misinterpreted here. The work is "cut out" because it is just a big chunk of work that needs to be arranged, fixed, cleaned, posted, or whatever. Not an autistic misread or problem to understand.
