Hi I'm Calzee! With the new 'The Final Shape' Expansion, i thought now would be a great time to start playing Destiny 2 and give an updated 2024 review! With the game always changing with new DLCs and Events, it really is a totally different game from the one in 2017.

D2 player with about ~4.5k hrs here. If you’re a new or returning player I’d suggest:
1. Take it slow you don’t need to dive head first into the endgame!

2. Try and get your friends to play with you. You’ll have more fun learning together.

3. Do the campaign, strikes, seasonal activities. Get some loot together so you can start making a build. Having a good build/weapons isn’t necessary BUT, will definitely make it easier and more fun when doing harder content. You’re not going to be able to get all the loot you want in a single day so it’s okay if it takes you a couple of weeks/month to acquire it all.

4. Once you’ve got a solid build together give the Exotic missions a try! All of them are pretty fun to do and some of them are on a timer so be quick. I’d recommend going in blind with your friends and try to figure out the mechanics yourselves first. It’s okay if you don’t complete it first try! If you’re struggling obviously feel free to look up a guide. Once completed you’ll earn an exotic weapon!

5. Now on to dungeons. Dungeons are some of the most fun/rewarding activities the game has to offer. IMO these are the dungeons I’d suggest trying first from easiest to hardest:
-Shattered Throne
-Pit of Heresy
-Prophecy
-Grasp of Avarice
-Spire of the Watcher
-Duality
-Ghosts of the Deep
-Warlords Ruin

The last two being my personal favorites. Anyway, pick one of the dungeons above and go in blind with some friends and try and learn the mechanics/encounters and jumping puzzles together. If you’re struggling feel free to look up a guide to help you finish it.

6. Do the same dungeon again but, this time try and complete each encounter and boss dps phase faster and more efficiently. Repeat those steps with the other dungeons!

7. Next, give raiding a try. Raids along with dungeons have some of the coolest/best loot the game has to offer. IMO these are the raids I’d suggest trying first from easiest to hardest:
-Vault of Glass
-Root of Nightmares
-Deep Stone Crypt
-King’s Fall
-Garden of Salvation
-Salvations Edge
-Vow of the Disciple
-Last Wish

Raiding can be super fun especially when everyone is learning the mechanics for the first time. If your group is willing to go in blind and has the time I’d recommend doing that. If not, completely understandable but, like dungeons you can find guides for raids online.

Hope this helps and if anyone wants to add tips to this list or if you have any questions feel free to ask ♥️

I just got it a few weeks ago, and I’m having a ton of fun. I tried the first descendant as well, and it did not feel good. It felt like a cash grab, even a mobile game from the beginning. I haven’t felt like I need to spend any money so far in destiny.

After playing destiny for a few weeks, I enjoyed the customization, the dynamic missions, all the cool stuff I can explore at the beginning. I just did a little research before playing so I wasn’t confused. In my opinion, even 5-10 minutes of research for me was enough to grasp all the menus and general gameplay.

People talked bad about it, told me not to get it, but I genuinely don’t understand the hate. I think it’s just a dislike for the microtransactions, and people confuse that for the entire game being bad. I think everyone just needs to actually attempt to have fun with games, not going tryhard 24/7. When you rush through games, you’re gonna get bored, and inevitably run out of content sooner, meaning you’ll get to that “money spending” gate faster. Just slow down and enjoy the game!

TLDR: there’s still tons of shit to do without spending money. Long time players need to stop scaring new players into getting into it because of their personal gripes with the game. It’s a fun game to pick up for the first time, in my opinion

I've started playing the game in 2019, back then what sucked me in was the gameplay. What kept me coming back over and over was the Story / Lore. It's just such a fascinating story, if you can understand and follow it, . which, for a new player is absolutely insane and understandably way too much (one of the biggest Lore content creators made a 10 hour long video about just the main story, and only 3 and a half hours in does the player guardian come in)

I started destiny 1 with house of wolves. I'm thinking about coming back. I loved this game so much. Good memories with friends.

Great video, I started to play D2 after a very long time of not playing Destiny 1 and I did have some trouble trying to understand what I needed to focus on. I do like the FPS/RPG aspect of it so I just kept on checking what was available. I’m still having trouble understanding the full story since D1, but I’m slowly getting the hang of the game again and I really like how much you can work on. I wish I could still play the first 2 expansions. I just got the legacy collection, so hope to see more cool stuff 😊

I have beaten the first and second games before they went free to play. If it has more content and free story expansion, I might come back to it.

I have 10, 000 hours in D1/D2, and I would not suggest someone getting into D2 right now as D3 is going to (have to) come out in less than two years and even with a veteran play like me, Destiny 2 is often very confusing and annoying. That said, it is the best looter shooter ever and the gunplay is the best in any game I have ever played. My best friend is a D1 vet who hasn't played since vanilla D2 (which is no longer in the game) and even he found D2 daunting.

What DLC do we need to get now? I got a bit concerned since all the DLC is like £350, but some of them don't seem like expansions and other's are like bundles, so I have no idea what to get!

I'm glad you said 'lore' not 'story'.

Very good review. Yes Destiny 2 is not kind for new players. Especially understanding weapons rolls and what is good. However there are tones of tools out there that can help you learn these things and in my opinion is what makes the weapon economy great.

Is d2 worth getting back into?? I played back when Vow of the disciple raid came out but I’m wondering if I should get back since I was a big fan of the game

So for a returning player how would i check my progress? I wanna try getting into it and get my friends into it

Nah, The First Descendant comes out in less than 4 days and is completely free to play. D2 is done with it's main 10 year story and it costs too much money to get up to parity with the current content. Pass until D3 comes out. I say this as someone that has played D2 over 4, 000 hours.

“Not very welcoming “ That doesn’t surprise me. I’m out

this is a great "new player" summary. but a terrible "actual player" review. There's so much stuff that youve stated wrong / missing. but as a new player, you wont know that, which kinda of makes this come back around to be being a good review

The short answer is NO i don't recommend this game to anyone especially in 2024 there are better shooters with better communities and player base.
