The story goes (And I'm skipping a few parts) that Zhubajie (The pig) falls in love with the celestial maiden (the spider).
But he mistakenly witnessed an affair between 2 other high up celestial nobles and was banished to earth as a yaoguai (demon)
The celestial maiden sought to follow him and asked what he became.
In chinese, "a pig" (ye Zhi Zhu) Sounds like 1 spider.
So the maiden chooses to turn into a spider yaoguai.
Upon descending onto earth they do eventually find each other and recognize one another despite being different yaoguais. And iirc, they have a child.
The problem is, the pig, even if he is a yaoguai now was a celestial general while the celestial maiden was nothing but a maiden and now a yaoguai.
So if the Celestial court discovered their child and love, they'd come down and kill her and their child.
So to keep them safe, the greatest love the pig could do, was to let them go.

Most Chinese Myth definitely have a sad demon story, the Stephen Chow version of monkey king called "A Chinese Odyssey" Have a very sad ending which is weird since the whole movie tone are comedic.

The fast changing of Violet Spider and Zhu Bajie kinda have the same meaning

Violet Spider was still clinging on to that love waiting for Bajie that her yaoguai side is slowly taking over her

While Bajie was on a path to becoming a Buddha, thus him transforming from a pig demon back to his original form

Or it could also signify how they see each other as Bajie met Violet Spider again, he saw her demon side taking over while Violet Spider only sees the true form of Bajie, his handsome human self
