What happens when you do nothing but eat, sleep, and meditate for 10 days straight? We both attended a 10 day Vipassana meditation retreat led by S.N. Goenka to find out.

We sat 10 hours a day for 10 days, so 100 hours straight of meditation. And we expected it to be hard, but this was by far, the most painful experience of our entire lives.

But, as most painful experiences do, it also completely changed our lives. So in this episode of Brolosophy, we’re sharing our top 3 lessons from the experience, and hopefully, how they can change your life, too.

Each subsequent Vipassana gets easier, which is proof that the pain is connected to energy within the body. That energy is part of traumas, habits, things you're holding on to and connections to negative experiences and people. The key to the technique is constantly letting go and surrendering while watching with equanimity. Over time the heavy pains are released and subtler more sublime energy flows appear and you begin to feel lighter and freer.

No dogma, no blind belief, a single book is not the authority....just pure practice and experience. This is the way.

This is what I realised after my meditation:

You are not the body, you are not the mind, you are not the thoughts or your feelings, you are not the breath. You are what is left now.

I did a 10 Day Vipassana recently. On Day 4, I had the most unimaginable pain. Way more painful than childbirth. I felt like I was being hanged like Jesus, or I could be a slave carrying tons of rocks and severely tortured. The body pain was insane that when I applied equanimity to the pain after crying for 2 hours, it slowly vanished. My chronic neck/shoulder tension also left me after the course. Isn't it crazy? I've spent years going for acupuncture, physiotherapy, massage, use foam roller, do neck stretches daily, move my body thru all sorts of exercises, gua sha, cupping...anything that can relieve my pain; after these 10 days, my chronic pain is gone! Thank you to Goenka, Buddha, all servers, and everyone supporting Vipassana. Highly recommended.

Day 1: “I realized I was clinically insane” 😂 Great video about how wild the mind is if we don’t tame it

As a vipasssana, old student who has been practicing for 25 years, sitting 10-day and long courses, serving on courses and as a member of the management team and on a center trust its great to hear your discussion about your course experiences. Some of us old students get together on Sunday mornings at 10am on Youtube on a program called "The Servers Table". It's a podcast format but the concept is that we are continuing the conversations that happen every day in the servers dinning rooms all over the world. I can't imagine a more diverse and interesting group of people than the members of the vipassana community. Each center is a stand-alone trust run and funded by old students who volunteer their time and money to start and run these centers world-wide. Geonka taught his first course in India in 1969 and now there are two hundred centers. It is he purest form of democracy that I have ever encountered and it continues to grow.

As a lifetime Buddhist practitioner, I recommend this 10-day Vipassana meditation just like you guys. I also attended the retreat a long time ago and I am a proponent for everyone to at least try it out. However, I would like to make one correction. Vipassana meditation practice (there are various forms, and Goenka's is one of them) is not the original meditation from the Buddha. The original teaching includes Samatha Vipassana. Samatha is the practice of cultivating the mind (using Anapanasati) to complete serenity (complete peace or no-mind) so we can gain Vipassana (Insight) into Reality (Impermanence and Non-Self). I just wanted to ensure people are informed with the correct information on Buddha-Dharma. Thanks for sharing the insights you gained from the retreat.

Old student here. I did my 1st retreat in 2002 and I have, for the most part, kept up with my practice. I don't know what kind of life I would have had, had I not done this practice. I am so grateful for Goenka and Vipassana.

I went to the first 10 days Vipassana last year and it really changed my life. I continue to attend the 1 day and 3 days a few times and daily meditation, as well as keeping the 5 precepts. I still go to church on Sundays as I am catholic but it has nothing to do with the religion.
I am glad that I started my spiritual journey with Vipassana and will continue to walk this path.

Such a refreshing 'recommendation' by YouTube. Having completed 18 ten day courses, yet not one for several years, what you guys talked about is such an accurate experience of when I attended my first course in 2001. Thanks for sharing your experience, it has encouraged me to step back on the path of dharma. Be happy guys. Peace.

Thank you for sharing! 80 thousand thoughts per day and most are unconcious The easy part of meditation is to take a breath and listen to the world around you/be present, the difficult part is taking the next breath, and so on
