Virology Live #6: Synthesis of RNA from RNA

Показать описание
Cells have no enzymes to copy long viral RNAs, so a virus-coded RNA dependent RNA polymerase is needed. In this session we discuss the principles and mechanisms of RNA synthesis by these enzymes, including priming of RNA synthesis, how mRNA and genomes are produced in infected cells, and the switch from synthesis of mRNAs to genomes. This discussion sets the stage for thinking about the two sources of diversity for RNA viruses - polymerization errors and recombination - that have enabled their reproductive success.

An eye-opening lecture, best I've listened to so far. Had no problem following it - alright, 75% of it - despite having zero microbiology in my background.

I did go back and listen again at a slower pace than the live session and it help immensely. Thanks for explaining a difficult and intricate topic, I especially liked the references to Coronavirus RNA synthesis, a useful and timely update!

Speaking of a glossary, I have found the internet to be a good glossary. It probably wouldn't work quite as well when watching the session live, but I have often found a search engine to be helpful. Sometimes I don't need to pause the session while looking something up, but usually I do.

I hate to have missed today's session, but will catch up on today's and the next one at the end of the week.

What's the difference between a primer and a template?

Catching up a day late owing to work, listenning in my hotel room on the aptly named "West Nile Street" in Glasgow

You lost me on this one, Vincent. I'll try watching again and see if it comes clear. I can't see the principles behind the specifics. I haven't taken organic chemistry or any course about the functions of the cell, which is probably the problem. I just need to catch up on that stuff.
