The close-ups are to give a sense of the actual character being there, via putting their face in the midst of the battle

I felt that the close up shots of Anakin and Count Dooku was a reflected similarity to Vaders and Luke’s duel
In cloud city. Anakin cut the power line and it becomes dark like in the carbon chamber. It’s the full circle of Anakin and Luke’s rushing in that led them both to losing their arm and hand. Same in Revenge of the sith and return of the Jedi. That giving in to the dark side moment. Anakin falls, Luke pulls back before it too late.

He did it with the mace and sidious duel because he wanted the actors to do the fight and not stunt double. If you notice the wide shots with ian has a cgi face on a stunt guy and back then you can tell it's cgi face. Ian was to old to move like Hayden and same with Mr Lee. If he did loads of wide with cgi face, this video would moan about that. He can't win either way. Probably one of the reasons why he planned on Disney making the trilogy he has planned. Fed up of dealing with all the crap from "fans"

Interesting how Anakin and Count Doku fight show both faces blue and read, like a symbol of Doku not being a full sith and Anakin not being a "good" jedi. It feels diferent in Windu and Palpatine scene...

No I wouldn't say that the closeups lightsaber fight scenes were not good for the movie to me it made it more personal and to how they felt while saber fighting.

See Luke Skywalker in the Mandalorian (made 20 years later).

The closeups say "hey brain I know you may be noticing something is a bit off (CGI faces of old guys on stunt doubles) but here is a close up to show you it is really them, allow us to get to another point in the fight, and let us cover up the moments where the CGI would have been terrible."

An entire fight using 2002 technology to CGI actual actors faces on stunt doubles who are fighting using only wide-shots would have looked terrible and still cost a fortune and taken forever.

George Lucas made a lot of terrible decisions in the prequels but changing the Palpatine fight, at the last minute aswell, was one of the worst.
He literally turned what was gonna be a semi cool scene into one of the most pathetically unconvincing fight scenes in cinema history.

Probably because of how hard the choreography was with actors?

George Lucas did his best work as part of a team when he would get push back for bad ideas. With the prequels, he surrounded himself with "Yes men" who couldn't or wouldn't push back when Lucas came up with bad ideas

Yea I love the prequels but was never a fan of the close ups. It's obviously to make it more personal and show the emotions on their faces but not a fan of it personally.

The actors were old and the cgi was bad and expensive at the time
