Lots of YT videos implying that you have to choose between them, but even if you are just starting, get an outfit of each. I quit bait casting 20 years ago, have done ultralight fishing with spinning all my life. Now with the new BFS rods and reels, I can start having fun with bait casting again. I think everybody should do both, makes your fishing all that much more versatile. And its even better if you fly fish too.

It's not the gear ratio itself that determines line retrieval. Because the arbor of a spinning reel is usually a wider diameter than the spool of a low-profile baitcaster, the inch of line per crank of retrieval of a lower numeric ratio spinning reel is very similar to that of a higher numeric ratio baitcaster (if the spinning reel is sized for same type of fishing that you'll use for the baitcaster). And while many newer and more expensive baitcasters have really stout drag systems, the spinning reel is known for having a stronger and more smoother drag by virtue of it's larger friction area. Finally, depending on the rod you are using, a spinning reel is quite capable of launching heavy baits. Look at surf fishers throwing 1-4 ounces of lures with spinning gear.

The big advantage with baitcasters is their efficiency which you touched on. If you're doing a lot of retrieving with swim baits, crank baits, or jerk baits, clicking a button and cranking will always beat opening a bail, closing a bail and then cranking. They also say that baitcasters are better at winching bass out of heavy, matted cover. I suppose that's true, although surf casting spinning set ups bring in 30-50 lbs. fish all the time.

After watching Adam royter video on the right way to cast spinning reel I fell in love with sissy stick. Baitcaster overrated.
