Ok so here’s what I use, and this is all for pier based shark fishing, and bait fishing.

I always use braid (hollowcore 80lb) for backing on all of my reels, good braid will last you a lifetime and you almost will never have to change it unless you get spooled. Braid is really bad when it rubs up against muscles, barnacles, etc. Never use braid for bite leaders, rub leaders, etc. I only use it for backing bc of line capacity.

I always use mono topshot (line that goes on top of braid), I use it for rubbing mainly, as well as casting purposes. I almost never have problems casting mono off my reel, and it is good for rubbing on stuff, the only problem is that it stretches over time and you need to change topshot.

I only use floro for small leaders sometimes. When I’m using knife jigs or whatever. Mono and floro can be substituted typically.

Braid: use it as spool line for maximum strength

Fluoro: amazing for fish that get spooked easily, use as leader to tie your hooks on

Mono: ol' reliable, or un-realiable, depends how you use it, if you fish amberjacks with mono, you're asking for a field day in hell, but if you fish for medium to small size fish, it's the absolute go-to leader line

I’ve used mono for my line my whole life. Good quality mono is affordable and really tough to beat, especially when spooling up a couple dozen rods.
It also splices well on big reels or for leader on smaller ones. Ande, Trilene, Stren etc have been on my reels since I was a kid in the 60s. I can see where braid would be useful in some situations. I’ve never been convinced by the hype of flouro though.
Seen it fail too many times where mono kept on chugging, to my mind it’s more hype than a viable alternative.
I look at things like fishing line, guns etc. manufacturers come out with something that works, so you buy it.
Then, suddenly it’s obsolete, won’t work anymore, you need the NEW, IMPROVED thing!
Suddenly a 30-06 won’t kill deer anymore, an old 870 without camo and a pistol grip won’t take turkey, and a fishing reel with mono just won’t bring fish to the boat any longer.
All my reels from 500 class to 12/0 have mono line, they all catch fish. I’m not a pro, so that one or two that do break off don’t affect my income. I do use wire leader where appropriate, but most often, mono leaders.
I guess I’m just an old fart set in his ways, buying plenty of extra mono with the money saved over the hype, and still catching fish…

Always use braid but you can change between floro or mono leader depending on the lure, technique, etc.

I pretty much always use an 8 or 10lb. 3' fluorocarbon leader on 15 lb. braid. It's just consistent for me. Everyone's fishing experience is different, but I feel like it gives me the best balance of longevity, sensitivity, durability, with the least stretch and buoyancy as possible.

I have also noticed braid can cast very light lures with ease

I have braid on all my setups and just use a fluoro or mono leader when needed

So my thing braid snaps like a mfer without leader in my expetience, while monos stretch maybe the only reson i've gotten outta all my snags cuz i could kinda "bully it" 😂 where i feel if i was using pure braid it'd be "oh i'm stuck/i casted like shit, time to lose the rig!" If anyones smarter then me lemme know!

I’ve used all. Just use mono. It can be used for everything unlike sinking flourocarbon or high vis braid. I’ve caught river smallmouth on top water using light mono, as well as bass in heavy cover. Unless you’re targeting toothy fish, like huge catfish or any esox/saltwater, use mono. Fishing isn’t as complicated as people make it out to be.

Interesting that you list stretch as a con. I always use braid with a a mono or fluoro leader, partly for the reduced visibility but mostly to absorb some of the shock during hooksets and to avoid hook pulls.
(Braid also has poor shock resistance)

Palamor knot is always the best with braid

How are everyone connecting Braid to Fluro/Mono leader? Using swivel or knot only? and how long is the leader?
