Honestly i think he just assumed that the termite mounds next to the snake were larger than they really were. I heard a longer version of the story, and he said he used the termite mounds to estimate its length. But he used gigantic termite mounds as reference. If these termite mounds weren't as big as he assumed, it would explain everything. I imagine he probably saw a 18ft or so african rock python (python sebae) and misjudged the distance and the size of the snake. Its a well known phenomenon that larger snakes are more often than not assumed to be much larger then they are in reality. Take for example the supposed 49ft reticulated python that was in the news around 15 years ago. When it was actually measured it was found to be 22ft. They thought it was more than twice as long as it really was. This story reminds me too much of that one. People are mindbogglingly bad at guessing the sizes of snakes. Thats all i think this is.
