China-US Chip War: Xi To Restrict Export Of Key Semiconductor Metals As Biden Weighs New Curbs

China is restricting exports of two key rare metals used to manufacture semiconductors or computer chips. Chinese exporters will need to acquire special licenses to export gallium and germanium products overseas from Beijing. The export restrictions, which will come into effect from Aug 1, have been announced as the US is reportedly mulling new curbs on the export of advanced chips to China. In guidelines issued on July 3, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and Customs said the restrictions were needed to "safeguard national security and interests".
