America vs China: the Chip War

A new world order is taking shape before our eyes. The Covid-19 pandemic showed the extent to which great powers are dependent on strategic products. The persistent shortage of semiconductors, essential to our daily lives, is reshaping geopolitical relations, fuelling inflation and increasing tensions between America and China.

It is estimated that 10 million cars worldwide were not produced in 2021 because manufacturers did not have enough semiconductors. From the computer to the toaster via our tablets and our refrigerators, microprocessors or semiconductors equip all our daily devices. They are of national strategic importance powering all advanced military and civilian technologies. Yet while demand for the quantity and quality of semiconductors has been growing, the amount of places they are produced has been shrinking. Only a few countries have the specialised knowledge and ability to produce cutting-edge chips with 63% of all chips produced in Taiwan.

That one island, which is already on the frontline of a superpower struggle between the US and China, dominates production means that the world’s economies are dependent on the stability of Taiwan. So what can be done to secure microprocessors? And how is the battle for semiconductors already affecting our daily lives?

Lol this documentary didn't explain anything. At least start with the history of semiconductors and then move onto the fall of Japan's semiconductor industry after US start a trade war, then the rise of S Korea and Taiwan's semiconductor industry; and Finally How China became self sufficient in semiconductors after US sanctions. China used to buy about 70% of all semiconductors But now are buying less than 20%, majority of the companies That sold semiconductors were US ones and That the government incentives wouldn't cover the revenue lost hence the big Tech lay off happening right now, US worker's Union would also be in the way of US producing cheap semiconductors which make US unable to compete on global stage. The result is chip war was a irreversible mistake That pushed China into market dominance.

It is well known that we Chinese people do not want to go to war, hot wars or "chip wars", with anyone anywhere. Let's business be business. But if you all push Taiwan, TSMC included, to much forwards, too much that we have to defend our own front door, then everything in Taiwan becomes a good puch bag to break. That's commonplace, is it not.

The documentation is misleading. It only stated that Taiwan semiconductor represents 30% of the world total productions. It sounded that Taiwan is so significant to the world. But it failed to mention that Taiwan total GDP was 30% plus of the Mainland's in 1990's. Just in short 30 years, Taiwan only counts 4% of the Mainland China's GDP. It is going to be a less and less significant factor to counter China. Let's put this way: Taiwan does not have s chance, with or without the US, winning a war against China.

Taiwan won't the leader forever and the mainland has tons of new talents, financial strength and its massive market. The world largest in fact and not even US could challenge China without destroying itself terribly in the process despite our conventional media are painting the pictures for the general public across the globe. Just ask Taiwan to completely detact from the mainland which is enjoying the largest surplus than any countries in the world. Moreover, it's just a part of China but governed independently.

Remember, Taiwan has never been a country, even from their own constitution, it is just a province. Please be more rigorous when making videos on your channel, it is very important to abide by the internationally recognized order and rules.

1:15 It is not just "the differential in labor costs". It is the quality of labor which the US does not have. Highly skilled labors have to be imported from Taiwan and S Korea have to be imported to help Samsung and TSMC build their semi-conductor factories in the US. The same is true for Canada. Samsung has to import more than 900 highly skilled engineers from S. Korea to help Canada build a EV lithium battery plant in Ontario, Canada. North America has fallen so far behind in technology that they don't even know they are at a few generations behind in the semi-conductor industry.

1:02 ...Taiwan is silicone shield... This statement viewed only from US side. Because America is using Taiwan against China.
For Taiwan actually this semiconductor industry is good trading commodity to the whole world. Use it wisely in positive and peaceful ways.

It would be in the US best interests to gradually focus on increasing GDP then imports.

I've seen a podcast where the host interview with a US military officier based in pacific, he is already saying chip is not the main focus when discussing US vs China geopolitics analysis, it is misleading by focusing too small and lose the big picture of two country's politics and interests. This documentary's editting is bad from pure quality by making no point only dumping scattered every single information they have collected online. Some shot are nice and filter is artistic, but it is not a good documentary i would say.

It didn't explain anything.

Amazing documentary with a great insight into the pitfalls regarding the chip industry and its ability to keep up and the changes that were made.
