I dont know what im doing, but these guys asked me to weld up some aluminum intercooler pipes, and im broke so I said yes. These gentleman were well aware of my inexperience and the quality of my work, so, i gave it a go.

A little tip I was given was to have a dedicated cut off wheel/flap disk for aluminum. Never use steel contaminated tools for aluminum you’re welding as it will impregnate the aluminum with steel particles causing dirty welds. Keep pushing you’re doing great.

Welds look like there functional doesn't matter if they look crap, just as long as they hold boost and the powder coating looks good. If you keep doing it youll get better

Preston, your welding has come a long, long ways since you got a table and started working where you can relax and see what you are doing! With ever skill comes an art to cover up a mistake. I like sandblast and peen the welds to hide issues. The peen (hammer) is needed to add stress to a weld. Many times the weld will turn the grain structure into a granular shape and it needs to be elongated to have any strength. You can take the torch over a weld and smooth out a weld, but this can cause other issues. If you ever doing any destructive testing, you will find those pretty welds don't always hold up. If you purge the air out of the (inside of the) pipe while you are welding, your end result will be very pretty. This is one area for jokes, purge with propane and watch the fun as the flamethrower gets intense.

This is how you get, not just good but renowned. The next ones will be easier and you'll end up making tools to help streamline or perfect the process. Like....

-Use tape as a straight edge for your wire brush areas. It'll keep your width consistent.
-If your tungsten isn't blue or balled up or cracking you got to clean it.
-Practice you mechanics, be consistent on your circle size, distance from work, and angle.
-feed the fill rod with one hand.
- make sure fill rod size is the right Dia. and alloy for the job. Ask your weld shop. Thinner rod for smaller/lower beads. Or 4043 will flow fast but won't match ect
- make sure your machine is set- balance is set for the alloy and quality of metal low 50s for a boat prop or high 70s for aircraft grade. Pulse per min, to gauge penetration. Ect
- clean everything.... with denatured alcohol.... twice.
-Get very comfy, like shoalin monk, on 1 leg and your arms floating in the air.

Your going to be great in no time, just keep asking more and more questions.

Get a de-burring tool, they are cheap and you can prep the cut pieces faster before welding them.
Wasn't the inlet side of the turbo clockable?

20th! Well, this came out much better than the pipe work you did on the Corvette engine the first time! Been a long time from then to now. The black did wonders for this project. Long time subscriber, Roger in Pierre South Dakota
