Hey Homestead Tribe! Let’s take a step farther into non-toxic living and make Homemade Laundry Detergent without any of the harsh chemicals! Both of our children have sensitive skin so we wanted to make a laundry detergent that would be as effective in cleaning up after them while not irritating their skin at the same time. This is what we came up with! Happy Washing Homestead Tribe!!

Recipe:
*4 cups Baking Soda
*4 cups Washing Soda
*3 1/2 cups unscented Pure Soap Flakes (Found on Amazon)
*30-50 drops Essential Oil of your choice (optional)

Directions:
Add 2 tablespoons for medium loads or 1/4 cup for large loads. Also add 1/4 cup vinegar separately before starting wash. Wash clothes on normal or deep water cycle for best results. This single batch of laundry detergent can be used for 100-120 loads!

✨We found Pure Organic on Amazon and bought their tallow based Pure Soap Flakes. It has no harsh chemicals, fragrances or dyes and made of all natural ingredients for sensitive skin. We really like this soap just make sure to wash fully as some soap flakes might take longer to dissolve.

People keep talking about adding borax. My understanding is of all the ingredients borax and/or washing soda do most of the cleaning. However washing soda’s pH is 11, compared to borax’s pH of 9.5. This doesn’t sound that much higher but remember the pH scale is logarithmic. So a washing soda mix is better for heavily soiled/ greasy clothes, whereas borax is a better all purpose cleaning. So truly you could probably swap out the washing soda with borax and be good to go for most laundry depending on your day-to-day activities.

Can you use something like this on baby clothes?

Not trying to be jerky, just making an observation...if you already have washing soda there's no need for baking soda. Washing soda is very similar and pretty much just a more alkaline version of the former. If anything it makes sense to add more washing soda in place of the baking soda, or you could add borax, although i know some people are worried about it being toxic.

You do not have to add washing soda and baking soda. It's literally baking soda baked in the oven that turns into washing soda. Baking soda is too harsh on your clothes. It irritates me when I see people use both
