WATCH BEFORE YOU PLAY DIABLO 2 RESURRECTED! The Story of Diablo 1 Explained [In Under 10 Minutes]

A warrior returns to his hometown of Tristram, after surviving a disastrous war with a neighbouring nation.

Upon entering the town, the warrior speaks to the local Tavern owner, who informs him of the recent events that lead to the town being deserted. Apparently mysterious dark riders destroyed the village. Many people were cut down where they stood, and those who took up arms were slain or dragged away to become slaves - or worse. The church at the edge of town has been desecrated and is being used for dark rituals. The screams that echo in the night are inhuman, but some of our townsfolk may yet survive.

He then urges the hero to follow the path that lies between his tavern and the blacksmith shop to find the church and save who he can.

The warrior is met with two other travelling heroes looking to aid him in clearing the church of the evil.

The the first introduces herself as a rogue named Moriena,
The second was a Vizjerie Sorcerer named Jazreth.
And the warrior himself reveals himself to be Albrechts brother, Prince Aiden.

Side note, this was canonically added later as a retcon of the nameless warriors past.

The Butcher:
Following Ogdens instructions Aiden happens upon a wounded townsman in front of the church. The man confirms that some evil had taken root in the town's cathedral, and to confront it, the archbishop Lazarus led a group of villagers into the structure, in order to rescue Leoric's missing son, Albrecht. He then warns the warrior the remaining villagers were set upon by a demon known as the Butcher, and few returned to tell the tale.

Waiting inside for fresh meat is the fabled butcher. A huge Overlord demon brandishing a large cleaver & inhuman speed. The Butcher nearly overwhelms the heroes but is eventually destroyed & his cleaver reclaimed. However the missing Prince is nowhere to be found.

On the fifteenth level of hell & heavily guarded is the staff of Lazarus. Aiden finds out from the towns resident scholar, Deckard Cain, that the staff can be used to track lazarus to his lair & perhaps save the young prince Albrecht before he is sacrificed. Cain Also reveals that he is part of an ancient order, called the horadrim & that they fought an ancient evil - and he believes that evil has been once again loosed upon the world.

Back on level 15 of hell a Red Portal appears above a pentagram & when stepped inside a brief cutscene plays showing that the heroes have travelled to Lazarus’ Unholy Alter.

After unlocking the doors to Lazarus inner sanctum, which are largely protected by Succubi. Aiden confronts Lazarus, who taunts the hero above an altar where a young boy has been brutally sacrificed to lazarus dark master.

Killing Lazarus & returning to Cain he says the boy wasnt albrecht but that the prince is still in danger.

Heading back to Hell, Aidan finds the Pentagram which Lazarus’ portal sat has now opened to the entrance to level 16 & the Lair of Diablo himself.

Inside, the threshold of hell itself its filled with Advocates and Blood Knights once in the service of leoric & now twisted into serving the dark lord, including the unique knight Sir Gorash.

Finally after felling a small army foul demons, the party of heroes face the lord of terror himself Diablo in his lair. But Albrecht is nowhere in sight.

Aidan and his companions wore the demon down until, ultimately, Aidan struck the final blow…

The demon bellowed a god awful cry that was said to be heard even by the residents of tristram above, blood pouring from the gaping wound in its chest & the lord of terror was no more, once again.

But as the party pulled the soul stone from Diablos head which contained its essence, it was then revealed that Diablo had used Albrecht as his host.

Believing he could contain Diablo's essence, he plunged the soulstone into his forehead. Blood filled his vision, the whispers of the damned echoed in his ears and Aidan could feel Diablo himself clawing his way up from the dark recesses of his soul. But he had done it. Diablo had once again been contained... For now.

Is it just me that is annoyed that they didn't remake Diablo 1 too? They could have easily added D1 to the start of D2 as starting chapter. What a missed opportunity

I remember this game as a kid, holy shit it was so scary and atmospheric. In game box there was this black-and-white manual with lore description, pictures of pentagrams and demons, powerful stuff for a kid. And ill never forget room full of impaled bodies and big demon with cleaver saying 'fresh meat'.
I liked dark fantasy stuff earlier, but this game cemented my love for gothic grim worlds.

Thank you for this! I played diablo 3 in highschool with friends but never owned it myself or knew the lore. I got D2R and haven't started the app yet cause I figured since this is my first diablo, I should follow the story. It's pretty interesting.

I tried watching act1 video but id rather a shorter version without every dialogue for every NPC.

I took Albrecht to be more akin to 14 than 10. Aidan likely would be either an older teenager or early 20-something. Depends on how Blizzard spun the lore on the royal family.
