I love when Scotty says "Oil is cheap, Engines costs thousands"

Repeat this clip every six months Scotty, you'll be amazed how many people don't know anything about that dipstick or how often to check oil.

I just bought a longer dipstick, now it’s fine.

Always try to keep it up to the full line, without going over. The bottom half of your engine is only cooled by oil. The water jacket does not extend that far. Over many, many miles the hotter temperature can cause more wear to the bottom half of your engine and decrease life.

Rest assured. Had a family member have oil below the minimum line and freaked out. Least we know now theres no engine damage ! 👍 bless u scotty

My brother has his own Auto Shop 3 customer engine replacement this month No Oil or no oil changes way past due! ! Change your oil$ not your engine

Checking the oil level takes 1 whole minute of your time. I check mine once or twice a month, if your engine is healthy there is no need to check it every few days. Doing it periodically for the peace of mind should be more than enough.

My folks had a car in Massachusetts, back in the late 70's early 80's my dad said he never changed the oil, he just added oil to it. Sometimes when he checked the dip stick there wasn't any on it at all. If oil went on sale I would pick up a case and drop it off the next time I visited. Didn't seem to leak but the engine did look like it was encased in layer of oily grime. Ran ok. It was a Ford.

i agree scotty. My friend run a engine with little oil in it, started ticking and ended with a rebuild and three damged pistons. three other pistons, new rings and crank bearings later its running fine again 🚗💨

It’s got so bad that instead of asking my 30 year old son did he check his oil I just do it myself as it’ll save me money in the long run as he’ll only ask us to help out with repairs or a new car, I took it to the garage just the other day and asked the mechanic to do a service, younger ones brought up in this throw away society and for ever changing things just think it’s the same for cars

I always check mine once a week and usually will have 1/8th of an extra quart in. Oil level is always full. Also I get the larger oil filter as some vehicles can use them but it depends on the vehicle.

You might want to tell your viewers Scotty that the distance from the low mark to the high mark is half a quart unless newer cars have changed that.
Someone might overfill.

The worst thing you can do is run a car when it's low on coolant, actually. You can ruin your engine in minutes by overheating.

Oil will give you some indication and you'll typically catch it low long before it's a big problem. Doesn't mean you shouldn't do regular oil checks and maintenance, though :)

My Jeep is sitting at the curb, because the low oil light didn't come on when it was essentially out of oil. I now own a $4000 brick. Don't be dumb like I was. Sometimes being lazy is expensive.

I had an old Dodge charger I added a quart of oil every week and I never changed the oil.

Some Euro vehicles don't have dipsticks in the engine compartment for checking the oil. They install their dipsticks behind the steering wheel.

Funny thing is, a good number of people who don't change/check their oil regularly end up with new cars or engines....its either the rich folks, or if they know some people.

For people who can't afford new engines, or newer cars...they value what they have.

I'm an old lady. I was hoping for directions for how to check my oil and not a discussion about how running my car with no oil is bad. Do I warm up the car first? Can I check the oil first thing in the morning when my car is cold. If the engine is warm, do I shut the car off before I check the oil? I watch your short videos often. I just really needed an A - Z on checking my oil. Thanks!
