I am native American-English speaker. I worked for company in US (in Silicon Valley California) that hired many non-native speakers (non-US citizens, but usually college educated). Most could speak English fluently. When I was just starting work at this company, I asked one (he was from India) how he spoke English so well, and he told me the same thing as Marina, he forced himself to start thinking in English. Two other guys I worked with were non-native speakers, but had learned English when they were children. One learned after he moved to the US as a teenager, and his English was very smooth. He told me he practiced by singing in English (he was a musician). The other learned English in Malaysia as a child/teenager and was taught by Catholic nuns in school. His pronunciations were like someone well educated in England. He rarely used American slang. I used to joke with him that he spoke the King's English. Very formal. Now I need to learn Español, because I live close to the US-Mexico border. And many many US citizens down here speak both. And I want to travel in Mexico and be able to communicate. so Le Vaya Bien. :-)

i started with my phone to english, everyone was saying 'why did you do that? do you understand anything? believe me, you will not turn your phone to polish again!' and you know what? i don't even want it. i don't want my phone to be in my native language, because i'm used to it. the second thing i did, um... oh i know, in december i started to write my diary in english, and i can't stop writing in it, cause i want to leave my memories there. i like, when i just open my diary and i start to reading it. it makes me feel like 🥺 when i read what happened in my school, probably if i didn't make it, i wouldn't remember what happened that day at all, and it helped me a lot in learning english. i'm from poland, but when i want to write something, i want to write it in english. other people from my class are like 'wow, where you learned it? you're so good in english!' but i think it's just from my desires. if you want, you can😉

I began singing in English more often. I find that helps me pronounce like a native.

Marina you are absolutely right. If we think about English much in our daily life, our brain will get focus on it, and this can improve our memorization words in English .Also listening to English music and watching English video just like yours which tend to make us more understanding in English are good ways for basic learners. All the need is practice everyday. Moreover, I am really respect you learning style you are very enthusiastic in learning new languages.

Great advice, Marina! I also wrote a diary in English in my student years. And the way you speak English - it's hard to believe that it isn't your mother tongue!)) Switching your mind to a different language is a miracle and it gives you so much fluency, but what I often need is the ability to quickly find translation equivalents in speaking and writing, so whatever new concepts I learn it's in two languages at once. Thank you for your radiant smile and inspiration!)))

I've dreamed many dreams in English where I would speak perfect English, I would interact and speak with people in English that I have never seen before but as soon as I woke up I would struggle again. I never figured it out to this very day, it's crazy.

I understand easily an English speaker, but if I want to respond to someone I have to find "shortcuts" in my mind and assamble the correct words like a jigsaw puzzle. 😅

Hi, Marina. Let me share my experience. I gave up translating English into my mother tongue in order to comprehend English a couple of years ago. Before then, I had 100% depended on translating to understand English for years and had remained a lower intermediate speaker of English. I had difficulties for a few months when I first started it. However, nearly half a year later since I began, I recognized that I started thinking only in English. BTW, I’m Japanese and I went through this process only in my country. Truth be told, I have never studied abroad in any native English countries. What helped me to be an advanced speaker of English is YouTube videos and your channel is one of them. Let me tell you, thank you very much. Your videos are awesome. Please keep doing amazing videos. Love you.😄👍
