To address the quesiton that has popped up a number of times:
If your CCTV system captures images of people outside the boundary of your private domestic property – for example, from neighbours’ homes or gardens, shared spaces, or from public areas – then the GDPR and the DPA will apply to you.

While in the scenarios you describe, I totally agree with you.

However, was woken up recently as a car crash outside my house, caused my parked car to be written off (and 2 other parked cars hit).

Neighbour across the road came over and said her ring doorbell had captured most of it.

Recently I had a prowler and when I reported this to the police, the first thing the wpc asked me was "do you have a ring doorbell camera?"

What's more likely - getting done for breach of privacy, or capturing useful evidence? And in the former case, unless you publish or give them footage, how do they prove what was captured?

I have a cctv system that was put in for monitoring myself as I kept falling, but then Installed a camera on my door and with the agreement with my neighbour was happy to record both sound and vision. This has been beneficial in finding who was stealing our parcels. There is clear CCTV posters noting the camera is there with a warning. As yet, both myself and my neighbour have saved stolen parcels and kept these thefts down now.

Something which I cannot understand is that, when a case is brought to court which has never before been ruled upon, or which even goes against or modifies previous rulings, how can someone be found guilty, or have to pay damages, when no-one previously could have known that it was illegal?

Thank you for the heads up. I am a buyer and seller situated in Flats, a couple of my parcels have been stolen recently from outside my front door, thus I have purchased a ring camera. Very useful information, as one of my neighbours isn't happy with me putting up the camera. It certainly as got me thinking.

Tried sneaking in at 0523 on Saturday completely wrecked after my works Xmas party. All captured on the Ring bloody doorbell. The evidence was unfortunately overwhelming so I’ve gone Guilty early and agreed she can have that new kitchen.
My question is have Ring breached the human rights act in respect of a bloody good night out once a year? There should be a mute function on the app for such situations. The Alexa was shouting motion detected at the front door, the dog started barking and that woke the wife and kids up.

i have an indoor Hive camera which is trained so as to cover the three doors which offer access to the property. There is a window which looks out on to our neighbours driveway, but with a very limited field of view. This indoor camera has on some occasions recorded my neighbour taking rubbiish to his bin. Certainly not what i intended and I was surprised that the motion detection was that good.

We had that, in conversation with our neighbour he mentioned something, that I know I only said in private with my wife. The only way he could have known was from the door bell sound recording.

4:47 Even if you blank out the area of the door. If they leave their flat they will still have to walk in the area of the frame that is not masked so you will still be monitoring them. So it doesn't seem to serve much purpose apart from not being able to view directly into their flat when they open the door.

Are you supposed to take your neighbour's word for it if they say that they are not recording you ? Especially in my case, where my neighbour installed one by stealth, i.e., not consulting any of his neighbours and ignoring all the guidelines such as not putting up signs, etc

My neighbour has a security ring camera in their back garden. Every time I open my back door the flood lights come on and my whole garden is lit up from the bright lights. Does this mean that the camera will pick up everything the light does?

Just this morning I called police to report dodgy recordings on my cameras from last night...complete with audio...looking for a place to hide an item on my property...1 telling the other to scuff out their footprints in the fresh snow etc. Without the audio I would not have known just how dodgy these people were behaving. No issue or even comment when I called and turned the 3 recordings over to police

If it is legal to film in a public place then if you have a cctv camera on your property facing the road then is that not the same as filming in public?

I know this is an older video but it has come up for me today. And it's great timing because a YT Short also came up yesterday about a crazy man who was recorded knocking on a door and saying he wanted to r*pe and k!ll the woman in the house!!! That doorbell recorder helped save people's lives.

All seems very strange when police ask if anyone has video footage when a crime has been committed
