How To Get Kids To Listen The First Time

Is it possible for your kids to listen the first time. Growing up, my dad would repeatedly say to me, "Don't make me tell you twice." That idea really became firm in my mind, so as a parent I've done that same thing saying, "Kids, don't make me tell you twice." I just perpetuated a pattern, realizing that sometimes kids don't always listen on the first go around.

But is there a way to get your kids to really listen and respond to the first request. The mentor we brought into our home to help us with this is Nicholeen Peck. She taught us some amazing ways to accomplish exactly that. Kids will be kids, but we've seen an incredible difference.

Great advice I can absolutely see this working. A lot of my requests are very minor and in the moment, meaning they aren't prepared for the child in a manner where they're absolutely certain a punishment will come if they don't comply. I'll have to restructure my thinking, to foster less micromanagement of their action.

When I demand my 7 year old be dressed for school by the time i get out of the shower (15 mins), she'll only have a shirt selected, to which i micro-demand every aspect like a drill sergeant..socks, pants, brush teeth, etc. It becomes very exhausting and I really need her to self-govern these tasks, as you put it.
