Top 20 Most UNRELIABLE Used SUVs | 6 to 20 year old cars

These are the most unreliable used SUVs in the market according to the 24,000 respondents of the Motor Easy survey in WhatCar magazine.

We always have to take these used car reliability surveys with a pinch of salt but the responses always make for an interesting read; some of the cars on this list clearly have big issues which is very sad to see.

This video focuses solely on the least reliable SUVs that are between 6 and 20 years old. These are not SUVs that will last forever, quite the opposite in fact.

Is #1 the worst SUV you can buy?

Not a Toyota / Lexus / Volvo or Honda in sight in this one by the way...

Good to see Peugeot remaining consistent Jim. My Pug 405 back in the early 90's was similarly afflicted with unreliability issues. It isn't a shocker to see Land Rover claim the POS trophy. I'd hesitate to buy even an LR ashtray or lapel badge, let alone an actual vehicle from there are lots of Wesley Pegden types out there who like to bugger about for hours under a bonnet fixing

Cheers Jim. No.1 not a surprise. But it is a mystery why after so many years of almost being a joke in some countries why its still so popular/desirable...

Hi Jim, I own a Discovery 4. It’s a great car if you don’t mind the fact that either you or an owner either side of you will need to deal with a catastrophic failure along with a lot of other expensive breakdowns. It’s a great family car but you need to have another car parked at your house cause the Discovery’s availability won’t be 100%. I also own a Toyota Landcruiser 105 which while not as comfortable or family friendly is a lot more fun to drive and less fussy

15 years driving a Mitsubishi GTO twin turbo very solid car only problem was with a exhaust back box and a battery .

I think it’s worth considering the more ‘toys’ you put on a car the more there is to go wrong, a high percentage of the most unreliable cars have off road capability even though the vast majority never see any dirt, a more level playing field would be an on road and an off road league table.

I've got a 24 year old RAV4 3dr. The original exhaust is looking a bit tired. I demand a full

Interesting that the Tuscon is there. The current model is receiving high ratings for reliability - but - the cars are only 2-3 years old. Maybe they don't age well?

If you were going to drive into the wilds would you choose a Landrover or would pick a Toyota Landcruiser …. Yeah if your life depended on the car working get the Toyota …
Interesting Jim, but as weirdly popular as Nissan’s and Landrover’s are, here’s a thing, why is the SUV so popular when, lets be honest, car with a lower centre of gravity actually drive better on the road?
Nice review …

Always knew JLR were going to be unreliable but never guessed that Nissan were gunning for JLR's crown....!!

I thought land/Range rovers would be lower on the list as so many are stolen

What constitute a vehicle to be defined as unreliable? I own a 2008 discovery 3 300, 000 km's+ & its proven reliable to me & many of my peers. Do we ever consider owner knowledge, service & maintenance attitude & reasons for breaking down before we defined a vehicle as unreliable?

Some surprises, but JLR as reliable as ever in being the worst reliable.

Got a SEAT Tarraco 69 Plate. Got a Driver Assist Button fault coming up. Gone to SEAT out of warranty. £99 to plug in a laptop. Unsure what's causing the fault. Want £150 an hour to investigate further. 2 hours and BCM module they want to replace... Just to see if it works (not 100% it will). Spent £29k on a car to have faults after 3 years 9 months ...

Won't do anything goodwill.

Local garage couldn't help because their diagnostic tool said steering wheel module fault and if they can't reprogramme it, I can't move the car.
