In this video, Rhonda Patrick and Luc van Loon (a renowned figure in the realm of protein metabolism with expertise on the nuanced role of collagen supplements in sports nutrition) discuss:

• Collagen's amino acid profile and how this effects muscle protein synthesis
• Animal studies show hydrolyzed collagen powder goes to cartilage — is this translatable to humans?
• The possible benefits of collagen peptides acting as signaling molecules
• How hydrolyzed collagen powder affects pain perception in people with arthritis
• How absorption & utilization differs between smaller (2-5 kilodalton) and larger (10 kilodalton) collagen peptides
• Does collagen supplementation benefit skin health?
• Is there benefit to consuming hydrolyzed collagen power solely for its unique amino acid profile?

🎯 Key points for quick navigation:

00:00 *🌱 Collagen supplements are often viewed as beneficial for muscle support, but their direct impact on muscle protein synthesis remains inconclusive.*
01:47 *🦴 Collagen constitutes a small fraction of muscle connective tissues, raising questions about its effectiveness in enhancing muscle function through supplementation.*
04:01 *🧪 Current studies have not substantiated claims of collagen peptides having significant bioactive peptide effects that enhance connective tissue protein synthesis.*
05:25 *🩸 Hydrolyzed collagen peptides have been observed to reach cartilage, suggesting potential benefits for joint health, although human applicability remains uncertain.*
08:25 *🤔 While small collagen peptides may show promise in reducing inflammation and supporting tissue synthesis in vitro, their physiological impact in humans requires further investigation.*
12:15 *🍽️ Peptides of 2-5 kDa from hydrolyzed collagen might have better absorption and potential tissue signaling roles, but clinical evidence is limited and emerging.*
14:36 *📈 Protein ingestion triggers muscle protein synthesis effectively, but similar mechanisms in other collagen-rich tissues like skin are poorly understood and require more research.*
18:07 *🍖 Hydrolyzed collagen's unique amino acid profile, rich in proline and glycine, suggests potential benefits for collagen-rich tissue repair post-surgery, though comparative studies with other protein sources are needed.*

I started using hydrolyzed collagen because I noticed that the skin on my lower legs had become thin and sensitive.
At age 76 that of course was an age problem. That problem is now gone, so I would say collagen works!
I now mix 15% of hydrolyzed collagen into whey protein, and add glycine and taurine. That mixed with Greek or Turkish yoghourt (15% fat) together with bilberries and raspberries is now a staple protein rich breakfast.

I also have compleatly problem free joints and muscles, hardly any skin wrinkles, and no varicose veins.
Strength exercise with barbell squats and standing press, and such, also tells me things work pretty well.
My favorits are pushups and pushups in gymnastic rings, and hanging leg raises on a bar.
I see no reason why I wouldn't continue to do these things a decade or two.

I swear by it. My hair nails grow like crazy and i dont have crepe skin. Much less joint pain. Using 5 years now….55 yrs old. Also NO wrinkles in my face

Video summary: unless you are low in glycine/proline, collagen supplementation will be inferior to more full amino chains like eggs or steak.

It seems above all that collagen powder sales make the skin of those in this business glow.
Honest chap.

Great to hear some more honest and grounding information on that topic. So basically what I'm hearing is that we have too little research, it may do something but probably not in terms of skin and such, it could have other benefits due to certain amino acids present in the collagen.

At the 18:50 mark this summary appears: "Collagen Supplementation: While not optimal for muscle protein synthesis, collagen supplements may support the health and repair of collagen-rich tissues like skin, joints, and bones. The high content of glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline in collagen can provide the necessary building blocks for these tissues. Hydrolyzed collagen, especially in smaller peptide forms, may offer better absorption and utilization, potentially enhancing its benefits."

I have been using chocolate collagen powder for two years. A couple of months ago, I fell extremely hard on my knees while running on my treadmill. A few minutes later, my knees started throbbing in pain, so I took one Tylenol 650mg and applied a small amount of Voltaren gel. It took a few hours for the pain to calm down. The next morning, I woke up, and the pain was completely gone. I haven't had any pain in my knees since that fall.

I think many people are deficient in glycine, despite eating enough muscle. I personally have noticed significant benefit from the addition of 30g of collagen per day, in addition to my already high protein intake of 150-200g per day from animal based sources. I also take EAAs and still, the collagen has provided additional benefits. Honestly, collagen is so cheap that i think it's a no-brainer to include it in the diet. It does no harm and additional glycine is very supportive of health, especially in the anti-aging community. Again, I don't use collagen as a muscle builder, I use it as a connective tissue supporter. Perhaps viewing collagen as a "glycine" supplement versus a "protein" supplement is the best way to view it, in my opinion.

I take collagen peptides, I figure even if they don’t do everything we hope, at the very least it’s nonfat protein

I didn't consult any doctors. I went to the store and bought a 1 lb container of collagen peptides. I started mixing that in with my smoothie everyday. Within days all my joint pain, and muscle pain in certain areas went away. I guess I could make a video about this, but I would suggest you go buy a container of collagen peptides yourself and find out.

Unless a person consumes adequate protein on a daily basis, I would prefer to be on the safe side and use collagen daily, in a cup of coffee or tea. This is my routine since I do not consume meat daily. There's no need to be confused, now!
