The individual on the far side of the BlackHawk helicopter is US Army Colonel Lee Van Arsdale. He is a West Point classmate of mine 1974 and was a participant in the actual operation in Somalia.

This movie came out when we were in MOUT training. We routinely effed up, pissing the instructors off, and get smoked, two of them deployed to Somalia and were very passionate. we all went out to see that movie and were blown away. We approached Monday with our heads out of our butts fired up to get it right out of respect for the trainers- great training, and it helped us gel as a team Better.

I read the book too. I couldn’t believe that no-one on the ground had made a map of Mogadishu and were totally reliant on being told where to turn. Maybe it was too messed up to keep an up to date map but they didn’t seem to even know which way they were facing.

Great movie. Perfectly illustrated what can happen when a weak President allows fighting men to go into harms way then cares more about world public opinion than supporting his men. Bill Clinton refused to Allow AC-130 gunships or any other heavy weapons to be used in support of the forces on the ground.

I love when people ask me what my favorite movie is. I say Blackhawk down and watch their faces go to intrigue to huh. Most people nowadays have heard of the movie but didn’t know that this actually happened. Then my face goes from intrigued to huh.

Lot of the film is BS the man person you follow wasn't even on a helicopter only thing you can 100% take away from this film is the acts of bravery Think there was a fair amount of stupidy as well.
