*NOTE* Not all fruit extracts are created equal! Citrus extracts like grapefruit and lemon can be irritating in higher concentrations. Even pineapple and papaya can be irritating to sensitive skin. If the product advertises that the skincare exfoliates, you may want to skip it for kids, even if the exfoliating ingredient is fruit based.

As a Sephora employee I’m warning, young children about harsh actives every single day. The one thing I will say, is they do listen. If you explain to them real science about skin care, they do have an interest in listening to you.

Skincare was the #1 thing my grands asked for for Christmas. Namely Drunk Elephant 🤦‍♀️.... they too wanted to make "smoothies" well I explained to them that #1 I can't afford DE #2 You don't NEED DE to have good skincare. So I bought them sets of the E.L.F Skincare. The most basic, easiest, no frills skin care. And they loved it! As I tell them, "Bougie is not always better"

It’s the parents! Why are these children allowed on social media? Why are the parents buying it?

I work at Sephora and young girls come in for lash serum and all of these other active ingredients they do not need. It really quite scary because I can’t always talk them out of it. Thank you for bringing attention to this issue.

Thank you for covering this. It’s scary how much kids are being “adultified” like I’m an adult and I don’t even wear a ton of makeup and don’t do a ton of skincare and I have pretty nice skin. My mom let me start washing my face with an unscented and simple ingredient face wash in 5th grade and allowed me to start wearing ONLY mascara as my friends were doing it. I wish kids would stay kids longer. This world is cruel and hard. As an adult now I would do anything to re do my childhood over and be a kid LONGER.

Absolutely on point discussion. I work in a large beauty retailer in Scotland. We have had to ban certain drunk elephant products to these very young kids. There is an insidious hold over this young generation that just feels very wrong 😞

My Mother would have NEVER paid for me to have skin care. I didn’t have makeup till I could afford it myself. I hope that all parents look into this and see this video.

When I was a kid, starting super young, a very important lesson that my mother taught me was that her money was her work. When we went to the store we were spending her work. My mom was a single mother and did a dangerous, physically demanding job.

Just because I wanted something doesn’t mean I was getting it. And I knew better than to even ask for a lot of things because I didn’t want my mom, who I loved, to feel bad because she had to say no. My mom taught me math by sitting down and doing the bills with me on her adding machine (sort of like a big clunky calculator). It wasn’t stressful btw, I loved it, but I was 5-6 years old and I knew how much things cost.

Even if you have the money, buying your kids a 10-step skincare routine from drunk elephant that costs ridiculous money (and is consumable, it doesn’t last forever), to me, just teaches them that money grows on trees and they get whatever they want.

I am so glad you spoke on this. My 7 year old has a lot of interest mostly due to her older cousins not social media. I bought her cerave face wash and moisturizer along with a headband to pull her hair back for her stocking and she was thrilled to be a “big girl”. Thankfully, I used to work in cosmetics at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s and can help guide her appropriately.

When you were talking about making sure kids are doing skincare because they want to do it, not because it is a must do thing, I realized I have been doing that with makeup for the longest time. I was constantly critiqued by my MIL about how much exposure my kids have to makeup. The thing is - they see me put on makeup every morning Monday through Friday because I get ready for work around as I help them get ready for school. I have always made it a point to drive home the fact that mommy puts on makeup because it is fun and she finds artistic completeness through it, not because she feels like she has to. I will definitely adopt that with skincare too. I never really thought about it in regards to skincare.

I went into Ulta last year at 26 years old looking for skincare and the employee said that I wouldn’t need retinol because I was “too young” and not to touch retinol until I was at least 25. I was flattered and told her my age. I can appreciate that she was trying to do right by me, and can’t understand how parents are letting their tweens use these products. I really hope parents see this and understand the possible ramifications. I have a 2 year old daughter and another girl on the way. I worry about their future with this culture of growing up too quickly.

Thank you, as a parent to a 12 & 15 year old too this is so important. My 12-year-old is the one who is into all of the skincare and makeup. As a dancer, she needs to wear makeup for performances so we have talked a lot about skincare and makeup. Also, as a middle schooler, she often wears mascara and gloss to school. I know I was wearing that type of makeup at her age. She and her friends all want Drunk Elephant and Glow Recipe but I won't buy items that expensive for her. As I tell her she has "champagne taste on a tap water budget" I will sometimes give her samples I get in IPSY but I will definitely be looking closer at the ingredients and making sure that they are appropriate for her.

My G-Daughter who is 10yrs old and her friends are Obsessed w Glow Recipe 🤦🏼‍♀️ I've tried telling her about the Dangers of certain active acids, including Retinol. I immediately sent this video to her and Mom 🙏🏼👀

My mom would let me use her travel size Clinique skincare every once and while as a “spa night”.

I can’t imagine allowing my kid to use a lot of these products. As an adult, drunk elephant wrecked my skin because it was too harsh for me. I can’t imagine what it will do to a child’s skin!

Kids always want to mimic what adults are doing, so it's great to have a video like this to help people figure out how to navigate this in a way that is safe and sane, since many of these products have strong ingredients in them. I did chuckle when you pointed out that we as adults are using these products because we are trying to get that "kid skin" that they are taking for granted! lol

As a mother of a 10 year old who has taken a recent interest in skincare, I want to thank you. This video came at the perfect time and I am so glad have more information to provide her with.

As an 11 year old, I have a very simple skincare routine it’s basically just
1:cheap gentle cleanser(sometimes)
2:CeraVe moisturizer
3:neutrogena sunscreen
4:and aquaphor or Vaseline on lips

I also have recently started wearing a little bit of makeup now and then, but, not pounds of makeup
And my skin hasn’t changed. I was also struggling with picking at my skin and pimples for a bit but I don’t do that anymore, I leave my skin alone.
