L knew he was gonna die. It's also explains why Mello did his self sacrifice for Near. Both are so prideful and determined to win they'll sacrifice their lives for it.
I love the symbolism in this anime too, outside of the OST there's so many nice details that go overlooked being how small they are, like this scene exaclty.
Truly a masterpiece anime no doubt.

I think the bells symbolize him going to a "new place". If he heard them when he started his life at the orphanage (probably a scared kid at the time) it makes sense to hear them when hes abt to die (also a scared adult)
