I like the idea that Bruce struggled so much at the start because he was also trying to bring Natasha back. But the soul stone was fighting that, as she was the price paid. Eventually, banner gives up on this and just wants those snapped to come back, and this is easier to accomplish and therefore hurts less

There’s another theory about the arm pain:

It wasn’t hurting due to the gauntlet clinging to his arm and the stones. It was hurting him severely because he was trying to bring back Nat, but since she sacrificed herself for the soul stone, the stones refused. If you remember at the end before Steve goes back in time to return the stones, Bruce reveals he tried to bring her back: “When I had the stones, the gauntlet I really tried to bring her back. I miss her man.”

What Captain America was showing his both care for & faith in his emerald friend. Part of being a good leader is having faith that you’re team/subordinates can endure, but also know when to stop them.

Which ultimately is playing with a radioactive wildfire when it comes to the emerald giant. If Bruce’s mind can’t take the pain, then the other less sociable guy will take over out of defensive, survival instinct.

I remember Bruce saying he should do it because the stones emit gamma radiation, so it was like he was built for this. But in reality the stones emitting gamma radiation meant that they were the one thing that could actually do real damage to him
