Expert Witness Hugh Ross Debunks Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Claim that the Bible Contains Junk Science

Astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson claimed that if all you had was the Bible, you would gain a false view of the universe. However, fellow astrophysicist and our expert witness, Dr. Hugh Ross, explains to us that if Dr. Tyson had applied his own scientific method to the Bible, he would have found a library of books full of accurate scientific insights.

I have listened to Dr Tyson for a few years and I have been convinced he has no clue what he is talking about, and a person is wise to listen to Dr Ross.

Actually, it’s the scientific community that has to keep changing its model as we learn more about the world. For example, modern genetics completely disproved Darwin’s theories. It’s either that or completely ignore some of the new discoveries that contradicts as anomalies.

When I listen to Dr. Tyson I get this sense that he became an astrophysicist in order to be admired. Dr. Ross on the other hand seems to be searching for clarity and truth and found it on biblical scripture.

I wish someone could arrange an afternoon-long sit-down luncheon for Drs. Ross and Tyson to discuss these matters sometime. In November 1996 I was making preliminary plans to see if a similar sit-down luncheon could be arranged for Dr. Robert C. Newman, principal author of GENESIS ONE AND THE ORIGIN OF THE EARTH, and Dr. Carl Sagan. (Newman finished his Ph.D. in astrophysics at Cornell shortly before Dr. Sagan was hired as faculty there, then Newman trained further after Cornell as a theologian/Bible scholar as well.) Unknown to me at the time, Dr. Sagan was terminally ill with cancer, away from Ithaca in Seattle for treatment, and then died a month later, so my hopeful efforts were too late. But it's not yet too late for Ross and Tyson to meet under similar, nonconfrontational circumstances.

I like Neil and find him very interesting. However, sometimes he displays what is called “chronological snobbery.” It is easy to criticize a civilization for their understanding of the cosmos when we have the benefit of new technology. If Neil were to have been born 4000 years ago he would not have been able to understand the cosmos as we understand it now. Given the technology 4000 years ago, rather the lack thereof, it is completely understandable why the creation account is depicted the way it is. Moreover, we must ask… is the *primary* purpose, of the Bible’s creation account, to depict how creation EXACTLY occurred? OR… Does the creation account have a lot more to say about who God is and his relationship with mankind. It seems pretty clear that the primary purpose is to communicate something about the nature and character of God.

Quite frankly, it is of little importance whether someone believes the creation account to be literal or not… The Word of God, as a whole, is meant to reveal who God is. To be a believer you do not have to believe that the creation account is literal. Above all else, BELIEVE/have faith/trust IN JESUS.
