In this video, we’re going to talk about the fastest way to stop a panic attack.

The symptoms of a panic attack include:
• Hyperventilation
• Sweating
• Dizziness
• Palpitations
• Lump in throat
• High pulse rate
• Heart pounding
• Chest pain

These symptoms are identical to those of another condition called respiratory alkalosis. Respiratory alkalosis is when your lungs are too alkaline.

For oxygen to bind and be released into the blood, you need Co2. When there’s too much oxygen or not enough Co2, your body will begin to starve of oxygen. This is known as the Bohr effect.

80% of oxygen is returned to the lungs undelivered.

As a result of the Bohr effect, when you have a panic attack, you flood your lungs with too much oxygen and start to suffocate and experience more air hunger.

Too much oxygen is not only a side effect of panic attacks, but it’s also the cause of respiratory alkalosis. This is why the symptoms are identical.

The best way to manage a panic attack is to control your breathing.

Here’s how to control your breathing during a panic attack:
1. Breath through your nose
2. Slow down your breathing by counting 3-4 seconds in and 3-4 seconds out
3. Breath with your diaphragm rather than your chest
4. Take soft and gentle breaths
5. Go outside to give yourself more space

Give these panic attack tips a try, and let me know how they work for you in the comments below.

I appreciate the day you were born. Such a blessing to millions of us! Not all heroes wear capes, some wear button ups on YouTube & educate complete strangers. You’re the best Dr. Berg!

I have had 1 million anxiety and panic attacks. The best things for me personally was: dont resist what you feel, accept and let it flow through you, it may be like an intense river, but it is a heck of a lot better than that building up and up to more and more tension. The second thing was this: one by one as you go along life, take the biggest things you fear or are unhappy about and accept it. This takes time, but it is life changing. Acceptance is not defeat, if anything you are defeating the effect the situation/feeling has on you.

“Box Breathing” is a great method. 4 seconds inhale, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds exhale, 4 seconds hold. Nice & gentle effort. Works great 👍🏻

If you are indeed hyperventilating due to a panic or anxiety attack, then rebreathing (breathing in a paper bag) for a few seconds can do wonders for calming you down. When I use to get anxiety attacks I would just bend my head down and pull my shirt up over my nose and breathe in and out through my nose for about 60 seconds and it worked every time. You are basically breathing in and out between the space of your shirt and your chest and it allows for rebreathing to take place. Hope this makes sense!

I lived with P.A for over 40 years. I have learned not to fight it and just deep breath..let it happen because the more u fight it the stronger it gets. Hope this helps because after all these years it has helped me a lot. Im 61, still have them but life is much better after doing this. God Bless u all.

I've had panic attacks since my early 20's. Didn't know what they were until my 40's. Knowing what they were (and that they were NOT heart attacks) helped me tremendously.
Both of my children have suffered them since their late teens (they're now in their mid to late 20's). I taught them how to recognize and counteract.
Thank you for sharing!❤

Yes. I have tried many times to control my breathing while having panic attacks. It works. I also ask my husband to hold my hands while breathing slowly. It helps me to relax as well.

I think many all had the idea that breathing in and out slowly helps but the fact that Dr.Berg explained it articulately with how it works scientifically just solidifies the breathing benefits for me as I understand it much more. Hours and hours of reading research papers and making sense of it on a short video is absolutely incredible. Thank you Dr.Berg! It’s incredibly impressive what you do.

I had my first panic attack a few years ago...it was caused by chronic stress. Was going through nursing school and working graveyard shift. Hardest thing I've ever had to do. Long story short, work life balance is VERY important. My body became very sensitive to work and stress ever since that day. Definitely a strong connection to stress and anxiety. It'll hit you like a train one day. Hope this helps someone. You'll get through it. Work out and decompress...it takes time but it gets better.

As a victim of panic attacks may I also add for those who suffer like I do, Get to an AC environment, cool air, also a cold shower or water poured over your head. I would keep a towel and a bottle of water in my car to help bring me back. And yes - exhale longer than yourinhale. Finally - breathe into a paper bag to capture more C02. Keep that bag in your car too.

A rare and concise breakdown of the physical cause and process that goes on behind panic attacks and how to self-correct through breathing. Love the simplicity and the understanding that puts a sense of “I can take control of this” in the moment. Just having that knowledge is the beginning point to reducing the intensity of the panic when it surfaces. Practicing deep breathing exercises daily sets up success.

Much better than popping anxiety pills, dealing with side effects…and STILL experiencing out of control panic attacks. Who has more incentive to correct health problems, yourself or big pharma?

I have had panic anxiety sence 1997. Tried psycholigists but they are too expensive in the long run. I avoid certain situations wich trigger my panic and because of this i live a somewhat limited life. I am not giving up nor am i feeling sorry for myself but sometimes i wish so much to be normal. Just to be able to do stuff freely without fear. Progress is slow, very slow but i belive that one beautifull day i will be a normal person again. Even if it will only be for the last five minutes of my life, it will still be worth a lifetime of fighting it!

In the emergency room, I was breathing too quickly, and the nurse brought me a brown paper bag to breath that brought me back to normal really fast. After a few minutes, I was able to take the bag off my mouth, and back to normal breathing and calmed down. The bag increased the CO2 levels.
