Piano Tuner vs Piano Technician: What's the Difference?

Here's an oxymoron: You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish.

I've got a viewer question: I've heard that the "if the soundboard is cracked, the piano is trash" thing is a myth, but I had also been watching a few other videos that said that it's 100% true and never to buy a piano with a cracked soundboard, so who's right?

You'd think with the market for piano tuners so small, they'd do the extra to become certified technicians too.

The best tuner is also technician. They will always be able to fix small problem, adjustments and so on. They won't say "oh you have to repair/buy a new piano/can throw this" and so on. Yes, some tuners says things like this, that they dont know anything about.

A tuner got my parents to throw a piano and buy a new one. It would cost 35 000 SEK to repair, he said. 30 years later, I took that piano (it was not thrown, it was put away) to a technician, who repaired it for half the sum. Back in the early 80's when it was put away, it would have cost 8 000 SEK to fix, less than the new piano. And surely better sound, more fun to play and a lot more beautiful (art nouveau).

Don't trust the tuner that aren't also a technician!

My technician is also more than happy to tell me how to fix things myself, and I enjoy knowing a lot and enjoy being able to fix it myself.

I am a very experienced piano technician (36 years) I find that most experienced "tuners" are competent at the most common repairs. They tend not to have a natural aptitude towards mechanical inclination. For these 'tuner types' it might be more a "musical aptitude" they posses which is much different. than mechanical inclination. They tend tp play piano better and are better able to learn aural tuning.. When it comes to repairs and other adjustments they can struggle, its harder for them.
