For those who don’t know, high mileage from playing over time causes those deeper indents on the hammers which compact the material creating a harsher/harder attack by brushing the hammers it rids them from those indents for the most part which gives them that warmer attack back.

Before was better for ragtime, now it's better for ballads

I'm a piano tuner and this trick saves you alot of time. Another quick trick for softening tone is squeezing the hammers gently with pliers just to get the crust off. It's very important for an old folks home because hearing aids cause them to hear everything wrong with the piano.

It actually amazes me how well piano tuners can play. I remember getting our piano tuned and they guy just started playing a beautiful piece like it was a piece of cake. I guess that's the best way you can tell what's going on with the piano and how you can fix it.

I think the fact that a bunch of old ladies said it was too harsh is golden

Holy cow. The change may be subtle for some, but it definitely sounds like heaven after. Great work!

My dad calls this hammer impaction. The harsher tone comes from string impressions, which increases hardness, in the felt of the hammers. He uses a motorized sanding drum to smooth out the impressions, which softens the tone back to its normal tone. It's amazing hearing the difference it makes.

I actually kinda prefer the first sound, since my dad is a rag time pianist, and that tinny quae is perfect for all of his favorites. But for pretty much any other kind of music, the change was necessary, and you did amazing work.

Closing my eyes, I couldn’t tell the difference.

Thank you for helping these ladies out in a more cost effective way.

So, to make sound soft you need brush that's hard. Noted.

Also, I like harsh piano sound, it really adds emotional flavor to some melodies.

Before sounds like someone talking while walking with sore feet while after sounds like a deep voice bellowing a melodic cheer

Gorgeous! For anyone wondering, I'm pretty sure the song he's playing is Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi, one of my favorite composers.
