CVT Transmission vs. Automatic || Which Is Better?

In general, there are three different types of transmissions. Even if you don't know much about how a transmission works, you have probably heard of the manual and the automatic. The CVT is the newest type of transmission. It is sometimes referred to as the shiftless transmission and is a type of automatic.

A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) does not make use of gears like a basic automatic transmission. Rather, it uses 2 pulleys linked by a belt. It's a bit like a snowmobile transmission: One pulley connects to the engine, the other one links to the transmission. The belt transfers the power between them.

Now you know the difference between a CVT transmission and an automatic transmission. Which one works for you?

Don't give up on CVTs because of the car in comes in. Choose the right car manufacturer, don't choose NOT to buy a car because it has a CVT. Toyota vehicles with CVTs are all widespread, from the coldest to hottest corners of the planet. They run 500, 000 km on CVTs with no problems. By following proper maintenance schedule and not driving like a maniac your CVT will last just as long as any other transmission. Subaru WRX CVT, lots of power and lots of heat generated, still going strong!

On paper, CVTs are absolutely incredible. The concept of a seamless transmission where you don't feel a shift at all and can maximise the efficiency/lifespan of your engine is mind blowing. In practice however, the sheer cost of manufacturing, maintaining, training for maintaining, time maintaining, and the special parts make it a very poor choice when compared to manual or automatic transmissions. Thankfully, CVTs seem to be getting better in terms of reliability and some can last a long time, but in general they are too difficult and exorbitantly expensive to realistically maintain. Repairing CVTs is a nightmare to the point where you'd be better off replacing the transmission entirely if something breaks, and that is not only horribly cost inefficient, but also wasteful.

Manual transmissions will always reign supreme in terms of cost and ease of repair.

The best is Toyota's eCVT which has no rubber bands, no clutches and no torque convertor, is much more efficient, reliable and long lasting... all those Prius taxis with 500, 000 miles on their original engine and transmission can't be wrong.

i have c300 4matic 2012 with 722.9 plus transmission. the mechanic put red oil 236.14 while the car needs oil 236.15. the car has done 14, 000 km with red oil 236.14. the exchange has no problem so far. Should I change the gear oil? If I change the oil, can I cause a problem?

CVT are very picky with the maintenance schedules and are not as long lasting as regular automatic transmissions which also is less picky in maintenance schedules. Another car video basically imply that smart car buyers should avoid CVT, especially Nissan/Infiniti and CVT.

They won't last long...IF YOU DON'T TAKE CARE OF IT...just like any car part. I love my CVT. Great power and great ride.

"They don't last as long as a conventional transmission." Nothing else needs to be said, they're a failure waiting to happen.

why are CVTs costlier to repair when they have just two pulleys and a belt as compared to the several planetary gear based components of a auto?

Why are they showing an AMG GT black series, it has a DCT automatic transmission
