Kaliningrad might be the most unique piece of Russian territory. In this video I dive deep into the big question: might Kaliningrad actually secede from Russia?

The now Kaliningrad district was a substantial part of Prussia and had a predominantly German population. Millions of Germans were ethnically cleansed and Russians were moved in to replace them at the end of WW2. There was no ethnich Russian population in Kaliningrad before 1945. It's a land grab, nothing else.

Konstantin S. actually did a Video on this Subject few days ago. One thought of his perhaps should be added here, namely that, with the NATO accession of Finland and Sweden, Kaliningrad ‘s military importance is considerably reduced, and that this contributes to Moscow”s lesser focus on the exclave.

If the war continues, then it seems likely the Russian economy will crash in the next year or so. And if that happens, I think it becomes much more likely you would get a mass independence movement in Kaliningrad and that it would succeed.

Some of my ancestors were Königsburg Germans that got pushed out 6 generations ago. I still hear about it! I hope they get out of Russia.

During the negotiations on German reunification in 1990, there were allegedly unofficial considerations to return Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg) to Germany. This was allegedly brought up by the Soviet side, but the German government refused

That's... that's not how it was. Russia never intended to give Kaliningrad to anyone, because it was their only port on Baltic Sea, and one of a very few that was winter operational, it had nothing to do with population, it was just an excuse, like todays war in Ukraine. That's one. Two, if anyone save Russia was ever considered, it wasn't Baltics, it was Poland. City was built somewhere around half of XIII century by Knights Hospitalers, and since XVI century it became Polish, and stayed that way up untill partition.

It is not mentioned here, but with a secession of Kalinigrad, while its population begins to lean towards Europe, the next step may be expressing the wish to join the EU.
I got something to mention on such, we don't need a third Hungary. What happened to the second Hungary? Serbia ..

Interesting but it would struggle on its own and none of the neighbouring counties will want the poison chalice. ie russia saying “there are ethnic russians over there we need to ‘protect’ “

Aside from other wonderful comments in th8s thread, another reason russia would be keeping kaliningrad is due the port facilities and sub pens there. Would they be willing to fight their way through, possibly not. A sea offensive is more likely via the northern fleet in Murmansk or via the kola peninsula.

There are a great many fiercely nationalist Russians in Kaliningrad. And we know nationalist Russians are violent. It wont happen peacefully.

Kalingrad was once Prussia in my great grandfather's time. I am not nor will I ever be Russian. My blood line is Prussian.
I don't hear anyone in Europe complaining about how the European countries took parts of Prussia, Russia included.

Hmm, maybe if they could do so quick enough — and simultaneously joined NATO at the same time — Russia wouldn’t dare do anything??? 🤔
