Move the Windows 11 Taskbar to the Left, Right or Top of the Screen - **UPDATED**

If you like Windows 11 but hate how you can't move the taskbar to the top, left or right side of the screen, there is a way you can accomplish this. Before the 22H2 update, you used to be able to do a quick registry edit to move the taskbar wherever you liked. Now that does not work but you can still use the Explorer Patcher app from the GitHub website to accomplish this.

Here is a link to the Explorer Patcher download.

Thanks! Why Microsoft insists on making these "improvements" by taking away functionality is beyond me.

Just got a new desktop with Win11, and was dreading losing my left side taskbar for the fake Apple look centered at the bottom, such a waste of vertical screen space. Hiding it helped, but pretty annoying. I'd searched for solutions before buying the PC, but only found your brilliant and flexible solution today. Thanks for your work!

Literally the only thing keeping me from moving to W11 from W10 was not being able to put my taskbar vertically on the left side of my screen.

Thank you so much! This worked like a charm! I really don't understand why they took this feature away to begin with!

Thanks a lot!, this worked like a charm: I have been using the Taskbar at the top of the screen for so many years now, that upgrading to Windows 11 was so uncomfortable and annoying to me due to the fact that the Taskbar was no longer allowed to be moved around... until I found your video. Thanks!

This is why most users have some apprehension about upgrading each new version of Windows, because despite the new and improved things, there's always features removed or that become less customisable. Finding out I can't simply move the taskbar to the left side on my second screen just in itself has put me off upgrading. The way my screens are set up, it's easier to see the taskbar icons in the top left than bottom of the screen. Right click context menu differences also.... and this only makes me think there's going to be more annoyances.

I'm glad to find others like myself that NEED the taskbar on top <3

Thank you so much! I absolutely hate the taskbar being at the bottom. I have always kept my tabs hidden on the right side of my screen. Unsure if it is because I am left-handed. I am able to focus on my work easier when it is on the right side and not distracting me or getting in the way. Much appreciated! I was about to toss my laptop out the window. lol

Have used top taskbar for over a decade. Scoured the net looking for a fix for the last 24hrs. All pointed to the non-working reg hack. THANK YOU for this video! My productivity has been terrible since the "upgrade" to win11. Also the explorer patcher gave me back my TaskView for all of my virtual desktops that I couldn't find in the newer version. Subscribed!

Thanks! This video is still germane in 2023 (almost 2024)!
I purchased a new PC last week that came with Windows 11 installed and have been trying to find how to fix the task bar "problem" ever since. I found your video today and it worked perfectly. Even better, actually, than what your video shows due to all the new updates of Explorer Patcher.

Brilliant! Task bar is back to the left side of the screen, exactly where I want it to be!!!

I am emphatic about having the taskbar at the top of the screen. Win11's inability to move the taskbar was a show stopper, until I found your Explorer Patch. Works perfectly, easily configured. Thank you so much !!!

For ultra-wide monitor users like me, having the task bar on the left is a must. Microsoft should fix this!

Thanks for the help and the tip about Explorer Patch! It was aggravating how the latest Windows 11 patch killed the registry hack. I don't understand why the default for Windows Taskbar is at the bottom, when every application has the menu at the top. It's a productivity killer IMO to have to bounce up and down across the screen to switch apps...

I'd like half a taskbar, it an in the way item. Thank you for putting move back in!!! They say a small number of unimportant users want this functionality. MS is not going to focus on it. I really appreciate someone watching out for the lil guys.

Thank you! My brain did not want to accept a taskbar stuck at the bottom of the screen and now, it doesn't have to!

The reason why I like the Start menu on top is because browser tabs are also up top. When I want to switch applications, I don't have to think if I'm going to a desktop application or a browser application first; I just move my mouse to the top. From there I pick the window that I wanted to activate. While this is a clever fix, I have trouble trusting unsigned code that I didn't write. I'll probably just try to use Alt+Tab more.

Thank you so much! This was super easy. I was able to right-click, unlock the taskbar, move it, and lock it again. However, I didn't have to do anything else for it to still have the Windows 11 taskbar. I have Windows 11 Home 22H2.
