I once used a pantyliner and some string for first aid. It got me out of the woods, quite literally.
The pantyliner made for a large sanitary bandage, and the string helped me maintain some pressure on the wound, after 15 minutes of elevation and pressure. Eventually I was able to walk out to safety with a cut on my leg down to the bone and my makeshift pressure bandage.

As a person who gets nosebleeds that look like a horror movie scene and make people runaway screaming, a tampon is your absolute best friend in emergency situations. Good absorption and they expand to provide pressure

Tampons work surprisingly well for stopping nose bleeds. Coaches often carry them in a first aid kit.
