I am in my 50's, I know it is taboo, but I still suck my thumb. My parents were great and did there best! I had, and always have had great oral care. I have never received a single compliant from my dentist about misaligned teeth, cleanings, etc. Could this taboo be a myth of dental health? Psychologically, it could suggest many things...like an internal way to manage stress without drugs?

When my kids were babies. We would gently pull their hands all day long out of their mouth. By month 6. They stopped. I am not paying for braces because of thumb sucking.

My mom put socks on my hand at the age of 1 and 2 to avoid thumbsucking ..

When my baby sister was more than 1 year old, she stop thumbsucking. Now she is 6 years old.

Mannn I was 7 or 8 before I stopped sucking my thumb although was mainly when I was in bed.

My sister and i where adopted as baby's and we both sacked our thumbs. I always wondered if there was some kind of connection of trauma. Would be interested in any percentage. I sucked my thumb till i was 12 years old and to stop i put a woollen glove on my hand before sleep. I had to have braces and the roof of my mouth is the shape of my thumb. My sister didn't brake her habit and her teeth where worse than mine.

Can thumb sucking cause tonsil stones or excess oral bacteria on tongue? I have struggled with both issues for a while and am starting to think regular thumb sucking could be the cause since i practise good oral hygiene.

i don't know how but i'm 12 years old i have been sucking my thumb for 12 years and i still have perfect teeth but i want to keep it that way and i really don't want braces so imma stop

It is not a habit.
Make sure you teach them a non harmful way to stem.
