Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. Although shingles can occur anywhere on your body, it most often appears as a single stripe of blisters that wraps around either the left or the right side of your torso.

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles.

I had shingles across my abdomen about 40 years ago while 5 months pregnant. No medical doctor could or would help me. I called a doctor of nutrition. He said the oldest remedy available was L- lysine and B 12. Immediately got on it and started having relief in 24 hours.

Don't mess around with shingles, it is beyond BRUTAL. I had it when I was 29, about the size of a lemon halfway down my back and it went from being the most itchy to the most painful thing I have ever experienced. You curious about just how itchy? Try and imagine if you had 50 mosquito bites all wearing wool beanies during the summer time after rolling in the grass and a haircut, it was horrific.

If you are struggling with itch, calamine lotion is excellent. Also gently dragging a cold, clean washcloth (the scratchy kind) across it is like ecstasy and won't pop your blisters.

If you're in the pain stage, fill up a spray bottle with apple cider vinegar and give it a spritz or two, helps take the edge off.

UPDATE: Day 12: I feel so much better. The supplements are helping! Sores are drying out, pain lessened. Day 4: I literally thought I had stumbled into poison oak the first 3 days I got shingles. The rash sounded like and looked a little like the pics of a poison oak outbreak. I started getting massive nerve pain and chills and knew something was wrong. I looked up shooting pain and rash and came across this info. I didnt get lysine into my system until day 6. Its day 8 and I finally see a very small improvement in my condition. The rash is still raw and painful but my energy is better. I dont use modern american doctors and I havent been sick or ill or needed drugs or surgeries for 65 yrs. This sick disease is a whole other horror. Hoping to turn a corner by day 10 but not holding my breath. Very hard to manage the pain.

I was diagnosed with it 7 days ago. It covered the right side of my face. Symptoms before the rash included: headache, ear ache, blisters in the mouth and on tongue, sores on my lips. Then the rash came. Ice packs, Tylenol and this stuff called Pink Relief (by Longevity Formulas) was the only thing I took for it. I didn't take anything they prescribed me. The rash is 90% gone, but my jaw bone and right temple are very sore. I still have a headache and ear ache too. Other than that, it took about 10 days from the start of symtoms to today.

In 2017 I got shingles right after I finished with doxycycline for Lyme. It was horrible. The ‘doc’ told me it was scabies (I told him it wasn’t) and he prescribed two tubes of cream ($65 each) that should have lasted two weeks. I poured both tubes all over within two days and it did nothing. Not one thing. So I scoured the net for answers. Found a forum and the woman spoke of exactly what I was experiencing. I used baking soda paste. It worked ! Try it ! Let it dry right on there. I did it before I went to bed. Makes a mess of your sheets, but SO worth it !

Dr Mandell, I don't have enough words to express how grateful I am❤ I went to my nearest GP last week Thursday, it was the 5th of March 2025. The doc gave me a presciption for Acyclovir 200mg, which is an antiviral tablet. I am supposed to take 1 each day for the next 30 days starting from that 5th. She said it might take 2-3 weeks to get properly healed. I was so stressed because I did not want to miss work for that long, and the shingles were so painfull and unbearable. I came across your video, and I went to the pharmacy the following day to get the L-Lysine 1000mg. It worked like magic. Within 3 days, they shrinked, turned darkand form scabs. Hi Dr Mandel, I know this is 2 years old, don't know if you will see this now, I had shingles for the second time. This time in Feb 2022 It went to both sides of my head and knock out my equilibrum and gave me what I call a heavy head (nerve pain). After going thru so many medical people that year, I didn't get on the medicine in time.and etc, I did my research and found you, I am so glad and appreciate you so much!!! I went to the health food store and got me some L-Lysine and been taking for some time. It with my supplement with vitamins, minerals and herbs it is helping.
