Burn Blisters 🔥 🦶

What to do if you have a burn blister?

This is actually a topic of debate by emergency physicians. If the burn is superficial, it can be treated without going to the hospital but, if it’s deep, you need to go to the hospital

Hands and feet are special areas because scarring can lead to functional impairment. Blisters this size should be evaluated by a doctor

Based on the current available evidence, blisters should, wherever possible, be left intact to reduce the risk of infection

Burn nurse here! On a blister that big, you should DEFINITELY take that skin off to see the tissue underneath. Depending on what that tissue looks like is how you determine what dressing to use.

My dad had blisters like that on his leg after a day at the beach. He popped them, then could barely walk. My mom took him to the ER and he had to have burn treatment for a week of going daily, soaking, removing dead skin. If he had left them intact, they could have just drained it and let it be. Lesson: don't pop them!!!!

Holy smokes that's the biggest blister I've ever seen. What kind of "burn" would do that?!?!?

Question: what is the substance coming out? Like, is it just water from our bodies?

I would get water blisters when I was young every time I went outside.
Several times they would burst and gnats and flies would get into the bubble.
It was fun living in the 70’s with no air conditioning.

My husband did this to my burn blister with a needle sterilised in fire(or so he thought). I ended up with an abscess which had to be cut and drained in an Indian hospital whilst on holiday in India. This had to be cleaned and packed every day of my holiday with iodine and some sort of gauze and then back in London for several weeks afterwards until it had healed. Having that gauze pulled out of the hole the surgeon had made in India daily was not a pleasant experience but they got to it in time before it became septic. Never try to pop a blister on your own at home. Now I have a terrible scar on my foot which often hurts when showering. It’s just permanently scabbed over and there’s nothing I can do about it.

For those who wonder why doctors tell you not to pop your blisters when their just small. it's because the fluid under the skin works similar to a pillow and will protect it from getting bumped while it's healing.
So when you pop them there's no pillow that protects it and it'll be infected especially if it's open.
