This is my favourite spice. Especially when used with cayenne which makes so much sense now! Lovely.

Good-quality sweet paprika definitely adds a lot more than just color. It's essential for Hungarian chicken paprikash.

As a European, it's funny that paprika in English refers to the spice, to while in most languages here it refers to bell peppers. Paprika is a much cooler name if you ask me.

Paprika is not red bell pepper. It is its own type of chili. The spice level is determined by the specific type of paprika chili used and how said chili is processed. Paprika chili look similar to hatch chilis, but longer. The flesh is thinner than bell peppers and they have a much more pungant flavour. Mock paprika made from bell peppers will have a very Flat taste.

Hungarian here, pretty sure paprika is not made from red bell peppers... they are red peppers but much thinner.

For anyone reading this, if you can, buy Hungarian or Spanish paprika. It’s a game changer. American paprika has little to no flavor but Spanish and Hungarian paprikas are quite flavorful. They have them at Whole Foods and they’re not any more expensive than American paprika is

Few things: we say there are three types, cuz we get three types here. In Hungary there are literally hundreds of different paprikas!

Also, I love the flavour of sweet paprika! It's sweet, and adds a lighter savoury note to my western foods

Just discovered smoked paprika. Our local food is not into spices, just basic salt/pepper/soy sauce/vinegar/fish sauce thing. I just recently adding paprika to all my dishes lol and so surprised how tasty my food is with the smoked one. Super love it

I put smoked paprika in the bechamel of my mac and cheese recipe! when I use a cheddar/pepper jack/smoked Gouda cheese combo, it really lifts the smokiness in a delicious way 😋

There may be some varieties made with bell pepper.
As a Hungarian we'll generally use álma peppers for paprika. BIG game changer my guy is checking to see if you can snag some paprika paste, Bende or Univer if you can find it (Erős Pista goes on everything at my house 😂)

Have you never tried fresh paprika? It’s shaped like a banana pepper and tastes exactly like the dried spice while bell pepper or capsicum tastes pretty bland in comparison.
