7:42 for the alpha matte I recommend using a plane which fills the screen and cut a hole with cylinder using Boolean modifier, with the hold out option turned on.

you can use vertex colors as a mask not sure about them arifacts with that technique

this doesn't seem to work if there is a texture involved. If the masking object has a texture on it, the texture will show in a kind of transparent way.
