Had a turp procedure in 2021 ! It put me in the hospital with excessive bleeding! Was in for a week. When discharged, I had a Foley catheter for about 2 months! I might be an exception to the normal experience but be aware things can go south without any warning

I had a TURP done just over 3 years ago for enlarge prostate as I was unable to urinate.
It took me about 6 months for it to settle down to get back to some sort of normal .
After I got the catheter out a week after the surgery I went for a void test to see if I could urinate naturally, I could so that was great.I also got off the Tamsulosin after about 3 to 4 weeks.

After the TURP it was still a challenge to control frequency and urgency for several weeks after that. It's almost a mind over matter thing, your brain is telling you to pee but in reality your bladder is nowhere near needing to be emptied. I had to retrain my brain to be in sync with my bladder by not rushing to pee everytime I got the urge, you just relax and try to hold off and after about 20 seconds the urge dissipated. You continue doing this elongation time each time you get the urge and over about 2 days it's works its way back in sync and improved very slowly over several weeks in my case.
My biggest relief was when my urologist told me the prostate reduction tissue was benign after it was tested just after the TURP.
The downside though was some ED disfunction which has gotten better but I was left with retrograde ejaculation after the TURP which is a downer as you lose the pleasure of that ejaculation feeling .
I did have complications pre procedure as I got sepsis from 2 common e-coli infections in my bloodstream and urine from which I went into septic shock . Thank goodness for the wonderful doctors and nurses who saved my life with their prompt and knowledgeable action without them I would not be here today and doing very well now.

Gentlemen, I just had Aquablation surgery five days ago. I am 47 years old and a bit young to have BPH, but after years on Tamsulosin 0.4 twice a day, my problem continued to worsen. I originally spoke with a urologist who was new to his profession and was going to put me down for the TURP surgery. I decided to get a second opinion. I spoke with another doctor who recommended someone who had done dozens if not hundreds of Aquablation surgeries. I was hospitalized for an overnight, sent home with a catheter, and two days later went back for a void test and had the catheter removed. That was two days ago, and I am doing well. Urine stream is fantastic, but right now there is pain with urination, and there has been since I returned home, but that is expected. I feel like I am healing and recovering very quickly, but maybe that is due to my younger age. I will try to post a follow up in another month or so to let you know how I'm doing. As of right now, I would say anyone with BPH talking to a urologist, see if they do Aquablation, ask how many they have performed. This is not something you want to mess around with, and there is so much less risk with Aquablation versus TURP. I found the site aquablation.com very helpful.

TURP two weeks ago. So far so good. Played hockey on day 12 and again today, day 14. Stationary bike for 20 minutes on day 13. Still a little discomfort when urinating, but way better than not being able to go. I just wish that I'd done it before I reached 67 after 10 years on Flomax.

Had this surgery done last January. Nurses kicked me out of the hospital 3 hours after waking up. Sure glad I had it done. Prostate gland was giving me a lot of grief.

Excellent video! Skipping all the medical terminology and down to earth commentary based on somebody's actual experience. Thanks a lot.

I highly recommend finding a urologist who does the green light laser procedure for less side effects and less bleeding for a same day in and out result.

There's a reason TURP is still regarded as the gold standard. It's very well known and has had most of the downsides it had when introduced reduced or removed. Yes it's more intrusive than lasers etc but it lasts longer. Typically ten years or more. I've just had it done. I'm four weeks post op and already feeling much better than before. It's been the right decision for me.

Nice sell sheet but It probably works for the few not the many. I had holep which is the new gold standard. In two months and still pain etc I think all these procedures leave a lot of men with long recoveries and the few heal quick. They need to all undersell and over deliver

Avoiding broccoli is the single worst thing one could do.
The sulforaphane producing properties alone are life saving, and to remove such a vegetable would do more harm than good.

Dr.,
For persons having only BPH, isn't Aquablation a safer procedure as it uses only waterjet at room temperature as against most other prostate surgeries that use extreme heat that can affect adversely the adjacent tissue and nerves?

I understand that the robotic procedure is so very accurate that it can avoid cutting out areas involved with sexual functions, unlike most other surgeries that remove all such areas, enabling patients to have a higher quality of life post-operation.

Could the numerous BPH sufferers in India too have access to this option, just as patients of most advanced nations please?

"TURP is the gold standard", say urologists who don't do Aquablation...

For me, it took much longer than 2 months.

All the side effects/consequences are the reasons I'm consulting the best urology professionals I can find. I'm sure there are better treatments.

Statistics on side effects, complications, etc. look better with Aquablation compared to TURP. Not sure which I will have done, both are covered by my insurance 100%. TURP procedure is closer to home and quick, Aquablation is far away and minimum of 1 day in hospital.

Does HR Brachytherapy count as surgery? I had two courses in 4 days----18 radioactive needles each time. So far. PSA went from 27 to 1.6 in 2 years. Everything seemed fairly normal, but "Willie the One-eyed Wonder Wiener"" is suddenly turning into a lazy serpent, and developing "a reptile disfunction, " but he is very attached to a 73 y-o. He still worked until six months ago.
